Good evening On Sunday night, England’s footballers have a date with destiny. As they take on Italy, they know that if they win they will enter a very select group of players who have won a major knockout tournament. Given that the names of those who ran out at Wembley in 1966 are still known by many in the country - not just football fans - they will understand just what is at stake. Thankfully though, this England team does not appear to be weighed down with the baggage of previous teams. They are for the most part very young and equally fearless. When they step out at Wembley they will be considering one outcome - victory - not what will happen to them if they fail. But regardless of the outcome, what Gareth Southgate and his team have achieved is something quite remarkable. They have reconnected the nation with the England football team - a relationship which looked dead and buried for years. That’s a win in my book before they even kick a ball ... but a victory on the night would seal the deal.
