Have you ever heard of a fast fat metabolizer? Typically, people who eat a low carb diet do not have as much glucose in their bodies as carb consumers, and so they more often have to rely on the breakdown of fats to supply energy for activities. Because of this ability to metabolize fat, many athletes believe that Carb Loading has a big impact on performance, especially if it is an endurance exercise.
This week, Dr. Sheri Colberg takes a look at this strategy for euglycemic as well as hyperglycemic patients, and shares her research on carb loading, exercise and diabetes.

Did You Know: When is the best time to exercise for T2D Patients?

According to findings from a small, retrospective study, men with excess weight or type 2 diabetes can reap more pronounced metabolic benefits from exercise when training is performed in the afternoon vs. morning.
In the study, 32 men with metabolic diseases, including diabetes and obesity, began a 12-week training program. They performed aerobic and resistance exercise training in the morning between 8-10 a.m. (20) or 3-6 p.m. (12), 3 days a week. Researchers found that, compared with participants who trained in the morning, participants who trained in the afternoon experienced more significant beneficial effects of exercise training on peripheral insulin sensitivity, insulin-mediated suppression of adipose tissue lipolysis, fasting plasma glucose levels, exercise performance, and fat mass. "Exercise training in the afternoon also tended to elicit more significant effects on basal hepatic glucose output," the researchers wrote.
The more significant improvement in peripheral insulin-stimulated glucose disposal observed upon exercise training in the afternoon could primarily be attributed to increased insulin-stimulated glucose oxidation and was paralleled by more significant improvements in fasting plasma glucose levels and exercise performance, the researchers wrote. "Also, a superior decline of fat mass was found upon exercise training in the afternoon compared to morning exercise training. Together, these data provide evidence in humans that the timing of exercise may amplify the beneficial health effects of exercise training."
