Debate has raged in all quarters ever since the disability royal commission called for the phasing out of segregated education in its final report. It's clear that if that were to happen, mainstream schools would have become much more inclusive of students with disabilities. Government advisor David Armstrong told ABC RN's Life Matters he welcomed the report as it had "mechanisms and teeth" to help make that happen. Both he and Nicole Lee, the President of People with Disability Australia, were hopeful about the possibilities for change and pointed to a number of smaller and regional schools already demonstrating how it can be done.
