Good morning, y'all. Welcome to the latest edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. The New Orleans Saints are coming off a loss — a tough one at that — so let's dive in to what went wrong and preview what's next: Tough lessonsRod Walker nailed it with his lede from the Saints' 15-12 loss to the Eagles: The Saints didn’t run into a buzzsaw Sunday. They ran into each other. The Saints hopes for a 3-0 start effectively ended when three players ran into each other in the final minutes against the Eagles, freeing Dallas Goedert for a 61-yard reception on third-and-16. The mistake ultimately provided some tough lessons all around, which Rod dove into in his column. Our Luke Johnson also had a detailed look at what went wrong for the defense. Run stuffedThe Saints averaged only 3.1 yards per carry against the Eagles, a big drop off for a rushing attack that had been one of the best in the league through the first two games. What happened? And did the Eagles provide a blueprint for the rest of the NFL? I tried to answer that in my latest article. My take: Not every team will be able to replicate the Eagles' success because they lack the big, imposing defensive tackles Philadelphia was able to deploy. But there were legitimate ways the Eagles played that other teams will try to copy. Give it a click for a deeper read, if you'd be so kind. Aging CamLet's wrap this up by taking a moment to discuss one of the more interesting plot points from Sunday's game: Cam Jordan only played 20 snaps. Jordan's dwindling playing time may not come as a surprise at this point of his career — he's 35 after all — but it was striking to hear coach Dennis Allen's explanation when asked about the future Hall of Famer's reduced role. "It boils down to effectiveness," Allen said. And that's the reality of the situation. Jordan hasn't been very effective over the last year and change, and so with Chase Young and Carl Granderson on the roster, it makes sense for the Saints to explore other options. What do you make of Jordan's role change? Are the Saints handling this the right way? Leave a comment on our next Saints Insider show, which records Wednesday. Until then, take care and thanks for reading. Cheers, Matthew Paras |
