TODAY'S TOP STORY Donβt get fooled by dollar store βdealsβ Think youβre getting a great deal at Dollar General? You might be a victim of a massive bait-and-switch operation. And with more DG stores in the U.S. than McDonaldβs restaurants (crazy, I know), this is important intel. Why? Because this dollar store chain might be stealing money right out of your pocket. Fear not: You have me by your side. What you see isnβt what you get Say you visit your local Dollar General store and you see a great discount on dog food β itβs only $8.95! You pick up a few other things, but your total at checkout is more than you expected. Later, you skim the receipt, and β wait, $10 for dog food? What happened to that deal? At best, the posted price was outdated; at worst, it was purposefully deceptive. In an investigation by the Ohio attorney general, over 80% of Dollar General stores had discrepancies between their shelf pricing and the price at the register. Thatβs awful. This happens routinely in Dollar Generalβs 19,000 locations, meaning the companyβs raking in hundreds of millions of dollars by increasing prices. Itβs nothing new Since 2017, DG has been fined over $20 million for shady price practices. Now, states like Ohio, Vermont, Missouri and New Jersey have filed class-action lawsuits. Dollar stores β particularly Dollar General β are rarely the deals theyβre cracked up to be. If you donβt have other options near you, here are tricks to get deals online: Use Amazon Coupons: I tap into this secret page on Amazon a lot. You really can save a ton! Buy returned, open box and refurbished products: Amazon Renewed is a place for deals, and everythingβs backed by a 90-day return guarantee. Try "ghosting": Sign in to a shopping account, add items to your cart, then leave the site. Often, youβll get a discount code via email enticing you to finish checking out. This only works if the retailer has your email address. Donβt be afraid to DM: Message a retailer on social media or use their siteβs chat and ask for a discount code. The worst thing they can say is βNo,β right? Search for coupons: Honey is a free browser extension that automatically finds coupons, looks for lower prices and gives you cash back for certain retailers while you shop online. When in doubt, you can always Google β[product name] couponβ β¦ but beware of spammy sites. Use a burner: A burner email address is a separate one you use just for shopping. Sign up for a promo email to get that 10% off and use a burner so your regular email inbox doesnβt fill up with promotional junk. π Help your family and friends from getting taken advantage of. DEALS OF THE DAY π€ Make your bed Itβs almost time to put away the big, heavy bedding until fall (or July, if you blast your AC). Prices for queen-sized sets: Linen-ish sheets: Pure 100% linen sheets are expensive, but a linen-cotton blend gives you the look and feel of linen for less β like $84.99 for this four-piece set. Fresh percale sheets: If you like your sheets crisp, this four-piece organic cotton percale set is for you. Nab βem in white for just $44.99. π Bamboo sheets: This six-piece bamboo sheet set is soft, cooling and comes in 30 colors, all of which are 50% off ($27.96). Cooling pillows: The cool side of this pillow is both sides. Iβm not entirely sure how it works but it does. Try one yourself for $27.99. A light blankie: This cotton muslin throw blanket is just perfect for when youβre reading in bed with the windows open and thereβs a light breeze. Itβs currently 50% off ($19.99) in Dark Vanilla and 25% off ($29.99) in Grey and Peach Pink. |
WEB WATERCOOLER H2-Oh-no: The White House asked governors to draw up plans to tackle cybersecurity threats to our state water systems. Hereβs the problem: Many facilities are underfunded and short-staffed, making a sudden coordinated attack a real possibility. I always have a few cases of water in storage, just in case. Don't believe everything you see on Netflix: The latest doc, "What Jennifer Did," uses AI-generated images to depict killer Jennifer Pan as a fun, bubbly girl. In reality, she paid hitmen $10,000 to murder her parents in 2010. With no AI disclosure during the film, itβs clear the documentary isnβt about historical accuracy β just bringing in more viewers. Toyota recall: Over 55,000 Prius and Prius HEV models (2023 and 2024) have a scary flaw β water can short-circuit rear door latches, causing the doors to open while driving or in a crash. Have one? Turn on the βauto-lock featureβ when shifting out of park. Toyota says thereβs a fix coming soon, so contact your dealership. I love you just the weigh you are: Folks on social media are pushing Ozempic but hush-hush about its nasty side effects. Karen Evans (paywall link), for instance, never mentioned that severe vomiting made her quit the drug. Get this: Health influencers with under 100,000 followers are making $10,000 and up promoting Ozempic. Influences with over a million followers? Theyβre making $50,000 to $125,000 per post. πΆβπ«οΈ Stop trying to create and remember strong passwords: Instead, make life easier and safer with the password manager I use and recommend. Keeper Security* is just $17.50 for a year and has over 275,000 five-star reviews. Itβs the best! |

TECH LIFE UPGRADES Secret Agent Man (or Woman): Keep your phone number hidden all the time with a quick change in its settings. On an iPhone, tap Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID. Toggle it off. On Android, the option is called Hide Number. Donβt be surprised if no one answers, OK? WORD UP: Youβre typing away, then you realize youβve had Caps Lock enabled. Ugh. In Microsoft Word, hit Shift + F3. Youβll shift between all caps, first letter capitalized and no caps. Too bad this trick doesnβt work in Google Docs. Try AI in Google Chrome: Turn it on by going to Chrome > Settings > Experimental AI. Now, youβll get writing help and tab organization. Nice. Make your own custom Tβshirts: Print photos, designs, logos β you name it β on special heat-transfer paper (50% off today). Then, place the image on a shirt using an iron, and just like that, you have a special gift! Alexa routines: Automate tasks like turning on lights, reading the news and starting the coffeemaker with a voice command. Set it up via the Alexa app by navigating to More > Routines, then create a routine with the trigger word(s) and the actions you want. |

UNTIL NEXT TIME ... The answer: False. In fact, constantly closing apps and reopening them can use up more of your battery than simply leaving them open in the background. Closing apps could help with your phoneβs performance if itβs low on memory, but it doesn't improve your battery life.
