Hello, Royal Watchers!
I want to start by saying hi, and thanking you for taking the time to read this e-mail every Friday. My name is Maija Kappler (it's pronounced like Maya), and I'll be taking over Watching the Royals from my colleague Chloe Tejada. I'm thrilled to be back in this position — I wrote the newsletter while Chloe was on parental leave, and have filled in here and there over the last few years.
I love the royals, and am particularly interested in digging up their old photos (there are some gems!), reading about the innovative new directions the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are taking, and, of course, learning everything I can about the Queen herself.
I'd love to hear what kind of royals coverage you're interested in. Feel free to get in touch with me to let me know what you're looking for.
Happy new year! 👑

| The Past Year Made It Clear Why Harry And Meghan Wanted To Leave | It may be hard to remember through the fog of everything that followed, but it's been one year since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they were stepping down from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family.
Since then, they've done a lot things they wouldn't have been allowed to do, had they remained full-time working senior royals. | |

When I was going through old photos of the royals as research for my look at how accurately Season 4 of "The Crown" told the story of the Royal Family, I came across quite a few striking photos of Prince Charles. We tend to always see the heir to the throne in a very solemn light. Yes, he's a serious man, but he obviously has a jovial side, too — and does spend some time having fun. Here are some photos of the Prince of Wales as you've never seen him before. |

Did you know that Queen Elizabeth owns all of the unmarked swans in Britain?
The tradition dates back to the 12th century, when swans were considered a valuable, upmarket food served at royal feasts. Since then, the Crown has the right to claim ownership of all unmarked mute swans swimming in open waters.
Of course, the Queen does not actually claim the U.K.'s swans, as they're not a protected species. |
