Congratulations. You've arrived at the biggest game week of the LSU football season so far, the annual, ancient, super-important showdown between the Tigers and the Ole Miss Rebels. How big is this game? It has the look and feel of a pre-College Football Playoff elimination game. It's also, if you go by the coaches' poll rankings, the first top-10 meeting between LSU (No. 10) and Ole Miss (No. 8) since way back in 1962. The game is also LSU's homecoming, and the centerpiece of the school's celebration of Tiger Stadium' 100th anniversary. In my game day column, I talk about the rich history of this rivalry, which dates back to 1894, and opine that there could have been no more perfect opponent for this game in this special season than Ole Miss. The Ole Miss game last season was arguably the low point for LSU — at least for its defense. Certainly for its defensive staff. A 55-49 loss in Oxford in which the Tigers surrendered a program record 706 yards total offense was the beginning of the end for Brian Kelly's entire defensive staff. That mass sacking (British soccer term) led to the return of new defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who Wilson Alexander profiles in this week's game day centerpiece. We've got loads of LSU content for you right now, including our staff predictions, Reed Darcey's four keys to the game and his SEC storylines for Week 7 of the season. There's some big off-the-field news to report, as former LSU safety Greg Brooks has filed a lawsuit against LSU, Brian Kelly and Brooks' neurosurgeon for the way his brain tumor situation was handled. I want to reserve comment on Brooks' case at least for right now, but suffice to say just about every aspect of his situation is unfortunate. Finally, we go off the gridiron for the engagement of LSU pole vaulting great Mondo Duplantis to his long-time girlfriend, Desire Inglander. Check out the unique way Mondo popped the question. Thanks as ever for reading and subscribing. Stick with us throughout the rest of this football season and all year round for the most comprehensive LSU sports coverage on the planet. Enjoy your college football Saturday everyone. Scott Rabalais |
