Friend, Free Press is celebrating our 15th birthday — and we hope you’ll celebrate with us. After all, you're part of the Free Press family — and story — and we hope you're as proud as we are about everything we've accomplished together. It all started in 2003, when a handful of people started working together out of a small apartment in Northampton, Massachusetts, to fight unchecked media consolidation, strengthen press freedom, support independent journalism and protect public media. Our founders officially incorporated on Aug. 14 that year and voilà — Free Press was born! Fast forward to 2018: Free Press is now 35 people strong, with offices in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., and additional staff working in 6 other states. Our more than 1.4 million members sign petitions, visit lawmakers, participate in protests and mobilize other activists in their communities. Thanks to members like you, we’ve racked up a long and impressive list of wins. From fighting for Net Neutrality and local media to resisting mass surveillance and finding new ways to improve local news, our milestones are your milestones. We’ve captured it all in our 15th-birthday timeline. We have our work cut out for us as we look to the challenges of the future. But with you by our side, we’re fired up to write Free Press’ next chapter as we continue to build the just and equitable media people need and deserve. Thanks for making this journey possible. Onward— Craig and the rest of the Free Press team freepress.net P.S. We’d love to include your happy birthday video or message on our special 15th-birthday page.
