Two decades of showing off local talent

Now in its 20th year, the Show Off Art Exhibition has come a long way since it began in 2013 with 19 artists. This year, a record-breaking 92 artists are exhibiting their work — an incredible achievement that speaks to the strength and creativity of our local arts community.

A huge variety of art mediums are on display, including oil on canvas, water paintings, photography, sketches and drawings, sculptures, and more. All are welcome and entry is free for the duration of the exhibition, which is on now until 13 April.

Queensland fruit fly update

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is intensifying its efforts in Perth's southern suburbs to erdicate the serious garden and agricultural pest, Queensland fruit fly (Qfly).

As of Friday 4 April, the Quarantine Area Notice was extended with a significantly reduced Corrective Action Zone (Red Zone) to focus the biosecurity response efforts. The revised Red Zone includes parts of Coolbellup.

Please visit the DPIRD website for Qfly updates and to check which zone your property is in and the action you need to take, if any.

Are you ready in the event of a storm?

Storms can happen anywhere, anytime. Last year, storm damage accounted for 67 per cent of the Cockburn State Emergency Service's call-outs.

Severe storms can be extremely dangerous, and we want you to be prepared should a storm hit. Most damage is caused by flying objects, fallen trees, and flooding from blocked gutters.

While the sun is still shining, here are some tips to prepare for and stay safe during a storm:

  • Trim branches around your home to prevent them falling on your roof or car
  • Clear gutters and downpipes so they don’t overflow after heavy rain
  • Store or weigh down loose objects around your home that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds, causing damage or injury
  • Prepare an emergency grab bag with a battery-operated radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit
  • Organise an emergency plan, including a plan to evacuate for your family and pets in case you need to leave your home.

After a lifetime of creating art and advocating for artists, Trevor (81) and his late wife Ruth moved from the UK to Hamilton Hill in 1997 where they embraced the community.
