I was always really attracted to New York in the early ‘90s—Supreme, the DIY aesthetic, skateboarding stuff—which was an era that was pre–internet; back then, when you’d see someone wearing something cool, it was anonymous. | | Haider Ackermann S/S 2018, Paris Fashion Week Men's, June 21, 2017. | rantnrave:// PARIS MEN'S FASHION WEEK Day 1, and there's so much to see. Thank the universe for HAIDER ACKERMANN and OAMC... DEMNA GVASALIA showed dads, kids, and dads + kids on the BALENCIAGA runway, and it had people all over the interwebs reverting back to use of the word "dad" as a prefix. Dadcore, dadbod, dadcaps, you get the picture. There's a theme here, and it was male progenitors. But we're not talking about just any dad. It’s dad, the concept. Dad, the cultural imaginary. You know, the “try your best,” the “who is FETTY WAP?”, the woefully unhip but you love it—dad. Which in today’s world of über-affectation is actually, cool. Dad = cool (but with ambivalence and humor, like all memes). Gvasalia is, as ever, on the pulse of wider movements in culture—toward the elevation of "everyday" dressing into a symbolic gesture, toward the notion of blending in to stand out. Never have so many pairs of slouchy jeans and baggy sweatshirts spoken so much, for so many. But Gvasalia doesn't leave it there. There's always a kind of winking subversion in his work—nods to the underground. Take this look, par exemple. Oh, and AGENT COOP- I mean KYLE MACLACHLAN was there... I respect the legacy of craft that PIERPAOLO PICCIOLI draws on for VALENTINO. This time, that craft was channeled almost exclusively into tracksuits... In retail/tech PR news, EBAY is offering a price match guarantee for its eBay Deals category. Could this be done with software, rather than making customers call in for a coupon code? Nothing like adding a little clunk to retail. I'm a diehard eBay fan, quirks and all, so if the company is performing survival tactics to compete with other retail behemoths, so be it... A GOLDMAN SACHS analyst utters statements about NIKE selling on AMAZON (in a client note) and it echoes throughout media and markets. No comment from either company yet... Loved GUY TREBAY's piece on adventures in laundry during fashion month... Sustainable before it was buzzy. Can that be the new dad fashion? | | - HK Mindy Meissen, curator |
