| | rantnrave:// Last Friday, REBECCA JARVIS of ABC NEWS and I sat down to discuss the future of media (more succinctly news) at THE BRILLIANT MINDS conference in STOCKHOLM. It’s a precarious time for the dissemination of information and journalism. And it’s at a moment when the public needs it more than ever. Trust in those institutions are depressed. Sometimes for good reason. Often not. Some of my point-of-view: Much like the internal ethos at REDEF, It's not enough to be smart anymore, you have to be curious. You should always question the underlying reason as to why you think something. Always ask why. Challenge your news sources. Seek out alternative views. Even if you disagree, understanding the other side is critical. Cynicism isn’t healthy. But a healthy skepticism is. Take care to have a balanced media diet. Take responsibility to seek truth as much as you can. Challenge the beliefs in your peer group. When seeking truth, we often defy logic or fact to be accepted by those groups or to reinforce what we thought we knew. That’s not truth. That’s not fact. That’s the dark side of human nature. We're not entitled to our own facts. Just our own interpretations. We’re the victims but need to stop blaming others. Platforms are gaining in power and wealth. We must hold them accountable for the media and news that proliferate through their ecosystems. I’m not sure how but this isn’t a printing press of old. This is instantaneous and global. And can be like a pandemic. Information is like a drug. Receiving it causes physiological changes in the body and mind. Engagement and social media are delivery systems. And engagement for business sake can be poison. Giving the people what they want can f*** the people. This is a moment and information is a great commodity and tool for unity or division. We need to own the problem... The amazing thing about WONDER WOMAN isn't the female director or female superhero, it's that anyone has reason to find those things amazing in the first place.
