John Cusack as 'Lloyd Dobbler' in "Say Anything" (1989)
Sunday - July 03, 2016 Sun - 07/03/16
rantnrave:// Good Morning from MALIBU, CA. Spent yesterday walking, sleeping in a chair and searching for sneakers online. CASEY WASSERMAN just had to tell me about BENJAMIN KAPELUSHNIK, aka "THE SNEAKER DON". This will break my bank account. My only dream in life is finding NIKE AIR ROYAL MID BLACK PATENT LEATHERS... We live in a world now with so much information. So much vying for our attention. A world of snippets and 140 characters. Most just need to know enough to discuss surface deep at dinner but sometimes the deep stuff can't be explained so easily and you need to put in the hours. If you have some this long weekend I urge you to watch O.J.: MADE IN AMERICA - a 30 FOR 30 documentary. At REDEF we're endlessly curious about what things mean, not just that they happened. The cause and effect. All points of view. This 7+ hour film (in 5 episodes) is a fascinating look at the environment of celebrity, race, politics, and culture that preceded and was the backdrop of the famous murder case. It's a sobering look at race in LOS ANGELES and explains the environment that surrounded the trial. Whether you agree or not with the premise and connections, Director EZRA EDELMAN ties together micro and macro narratives that try to explain a moment in time beyond the crime. It's beyond stellar. Required viewing. I've never been a sports fanatic but ESPN tapped into something more universal with 30 for 30. Human drama. The stories behind the scoreboard. It's one of the best shows in the history of television... FACEBOOK’s algorithm is like the mafia... Do you avoid opening your mail? I've been carrying around a pile of mail that would choke an elephant. It's in a bag that I take everywhere because each day is the day I'm going to go through it. And I don't. I just want mail to go away... You can follow or lead your audience but you can't ignore them. #FutureOfVideo... R.I.P. ELIE WIESEL, "the conscience of the world"... And to MICHAEL CIMINO. A fillmmaker who went for it. Whether hit or miss. Not enough creative risk in film these days. And of course, he did YEAR OF THE DRAGON. JOEY TAI, one of the underrated villains in cinema... Dear CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS, who's genius idea was it to have cameras that film red lights by having a series of flashes go off right into the driver's sight line? It's the car equivalent of people shooting laser pointers into airplane cockpits on takeoff. Big brother is a stupid head... Happy Birthday to JOHN MENEILLY, DAVID BENJAMIN, HARRIET SEITLER and DAN ROLLMAN.

How Obama Could Revolutionize Nuclear Weapons Strategy Before He Goes
by Bruce Blair
During the past half century, no president has dared to change the nation's nuclear strategy in any fundamental way. Mired in a Cold-War mind-set, the strategy today has grown less and less connected to the contemporary world and its emerging security threats: terrorism, proliferation, cyber warfare, economic disruption, mass refugee migrations and climate change.

Outside, it's rush hour, a still-sunny spring evening in Atlanta, but in here, you'd never know it. This room is windowless and dark, illuminated only by a projector shooting shimmering green stars onto the ceiling, a computer monitor displaying Pro Tools, and the glowing rack of gear beneath it.

Best TV Networks of 2016 (So Far)

he biggest trend in the TV industry so far in 2016 has, sadly, been the same as the one which shaped 2015: Viewership, for both broadcast and cable networks, continues to decline. This doesn’t mean it’s all death and despair in TV land, however.

How neoliberalism fuels the racist xenophobia behind Brexit and Donald Trump
by Ben Norton
The U.K. has voted to leave the European Union, and things have been thrown into disarray. Amid the chaos, many have blamed the unexpected vote on racism and bigotry. There is no question that xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiments were strong drivers behind Brexit, the British vote to leave the E.U.

The link between language and cognition is a red herring
by Frans de Waal
Scientists working on animal cognition often dwell on their desire to talk to the animals. Oddly enough, this particular desire must have passed me by, because I have never felt it. I am not waiting to hear what my animals have to say about themselves, taking the rather Wittgensteinian position that their message might not be all that enlightening.

It's your nighttime routine: You drop your phone onto the nightstand charging pad, and it asks about your day. You tell it, talking to the virtual personal assistant just like you'd talk to a friend. And why not? Your phone's artificial intelligence knows you almost as well as you know yourself (maybe even better).
