Michelle Williams and Casey Affleck in "Manchester by the Sea" (2016) (Amazon Studios)
Friday - November 18, 2016 Fri - 11/18/16
rantnrave:// Grief and tragedy are a part of life. You can shut down, become harder, and more distant. Or you can take the pain and grow to be more open and empathetic. Many of us go down both roads. Last year as I was coming out of a heart surgery, my first trip was to THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL. My favorite film? MANCHESTER BY THE SEA. A story about facing tragedy. Who makes it through and who doesn't? I was very, very moved. Maybe due to the last few years. Or maybe because it's an emotional human story that we could see ourselves in. Real life. I found out about it through friend, CHIRS MOORE, one of the film's producers. Written and directed by KENNETH LONERGAN. Starring CASEY AFFLECK, MICHELLE WILLIAMS and KYLE CHANDLER. We hear there's "no middle" in movies anymore. Independent film is dead. Only big budget movies will survive. I think that's a crock of s***. The methods are changing. We have NETFLIX, AMAZON, HULU and so many more outlets. The ability to super-serve. I had opened the festival panels with a discussion about the independent film biz and Amazon's TED HOPE was one of my guests. He's one its champions. He had not seen it yet but thought the script was one of the best. And sure enough, AMAZON STUDIOS bought the film. Thanks to places like this we'll see more great movies that big studios wouldn't touch. The acting is beyond superb. Affleck deserves a nomination. Michelle Williams is fantastic. There are two scenes in the film that are so heartbreaking and simple and yet with very few words. Masterful acting and directing. It's getting a theater release today and I urge you to see it. It's heavy material but reminds us - in a time of so much venom, vitriol, and rancor - of our humanity. It's an amazing film... And there's TV show that also has a wonderful sense of humanity. It's not bombastic, it's a slow build over 4 seasons, but I just loved SUNDANCETV's RECTIFY. The story of a death row inmate that gets released and his journey back into society. It's a must see... "Trump appeared to be relying on information gleaned from an article posted on a website of a shop that sells business cards and door hangers"... What wouldn't you do out of family loyalty?... Thinking about tech companies that don't ship product well. Often comes down to one simple thing: No mandate and developers deciding what they want to work on... I believe the internet opened up the world to everyone. I fear humanity drove it further apart. The internet reflects humanity... New TWITTER game: Find the minorities in the GOP photo... Happy Birthday to ERIC RICHMAN, KATIA BEAUCHAMP, JEREMY WENOKUR, ANTONIO CAMPO DALL'ORTO, RACHEL ZALIS, GERRIT MEIER and PETER BARON.
