It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. | | Peter Gallagher in "The Idolmaker" (1980) (United Artists) | | | | “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” |

| rantnrave:// In the past, we've taken a look at "Economic Growth, Disruption, Innovation, and Anti-Trust." Traditional companies and their deals (media mergers) are often painted as the culprits or receive the scrutiny. But are the "new jacks" getting a free pass? This op-ed in THE NEW YORK TIMES suggests: "Forget AT&T. The Real Monopolies Are Google and Facebook"... Words are so important. When there is such a great divide choose your words wisely to move to the middle. Everyone comes with baggage... "The kids of GENERATION Z have never known a world without smartphones and social media. The WASHINGTON POST examines what it means to grow up in an era where learning, flirting and hanging out all happens on screens." The entire series: "The Screen Age"... Delivery doesn't make you genuine. Your actions and constitution does... I love going to the movies. Theaters have a big job ahead trying to modernize the theater experience. It's not been their strong suit. IPIC is trying. As good as their theaters are, their online experience is terrible. I use FANDANGO constantly but not evolving in all the ways I'd like to see. Yesterday I met with a company called ATOM TICKETS. They are experimenting the way a tech company would. Trying to make it easy for us. Not fearing mistakes or unpopular decisions within the ecosystem. Variable pricing (because movies are the last seat business without it). Ticket and food bundles. Pre-ordering food (and seat delivery). Social media integration to buy for or share your intentions with friends. Merchandise upsell as you are checking out. Sending friends their tickets so they can meet you. And more. A great start and an example of what that business needs to evolve. Now if they can work on me sharing armrests. If theaters think about consumers first and what they would want, they have a shot at the future... What I'll be watching on NETFLIX this Friday because TED SARANDOS and team are behind the conspiracy to make me a shut-in who streams video more than I go outside. And then there's "Best TV of 2016: The Year in Lists," a REDEF MediaSET... Resolutions: Stop doubting myself. Trust my gut. Surround myself with people I enjoy being around and learning from. Drop legacy stresses. Get REDEF into overdrive... BEN EVANS on curation... Vocal critics who seem to stop once the target of their criticism wins... Seventeen years after TOM BRADY came into the NFL as a nobody he is among its most revered and controversial figures. He's at the center of two of the biggest arguments in sports: Is he a cheater? Is he the greatest quarterback ever? Even at 39, he's an MVP candidate again. "Tom Brady: The Patriots' Controversial Golden Boy," a REDEF SportsSET... Happy Birthday and congrats to my old friend BOB BAKISH, the new CEO of VIACOM. And to JENNIFER BIRD, CORNELIA FRAME and GISELE MONCURE. | | - Jason Hirschhorn, curator |

In the tech industry we worship “disruption,” but to most people it’s a dirty word. In a world where insecurity and mistrust in institutions are on the rise, tech is increasingly out of step with the values of the public. This puts our companies at risk of hostile regulation and customer backlashes.

The brain trust at Tribune Publishing knew that modern-day economics don't work for regional newspapers. So they had to innovate. Thus was born tronc, the new name for Tribune Publishing. tronc stands for "Tribune online content," and should be capitalized under no circumstance whatsoever-even when it's the first word in a sentence.
