Music can be cutthroat, especially for women. We’re taught inadvertently, there’s only so much room for you. There can only be one blonde one, there can only be one queer one, you know what I mean? Space is limited... Collaboration is a good way to squash those kinds of notions. | | Wait, I think I know who this is. On fire, circa 1974. | rantnrave:// To whom it may concern: Um, no, the woke police have not ruined entertainment. They have not ruined TV, they have not ruined film and they have most definitely not ruined music. I'm not sure they'd know how even if they wanted to. But if you thought JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE's SUPER BOWL halftime show last week was too tame and that he didn't shake his hips with sufficiently sexual swagger, here are some people you might consider blaming besides the sheriffs of wokeness: 1) The person or people who designed the halftime show 50-plus years ago as a spectacle of G-rated, middle-American entertainment, a vision from which it has almost never wavered (and there is nothing wrong with that). JT's previous halftime appearance, 14 years ago, was the exception, not the rule, and the NFL and America both hated it. 2) The old men who run the NFL and continue to enforce that vision with impressive singlemindedness. Think of them as the un-woke police. 3) Justin Timberlake, who has always hewed as close to BING CROSBY as he does to RIHANNA (and there's nothing wrong with that either; it's who he is). But if you're worried that there's a secret cultural oversight board trying to enforce a code of correctness on all entertainment, I can assure you no one in NASHVILLE is trying to stop people like MORGAN EVANS from making songs like this and no one in NY or LA is trying to stop people like TOVE LO from making songs like this. And we can still listen to all the MIGOS records we want, with all their sonic thrills and lyrical eyebrow-raisers. And we can have discussions about them, same as we can have discussions about "THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI." And you, as always, will be free to listen in or not... Country music's chromosome police, meanwhile, come for MAREN MORRIS, and writer MARISSA R. MOSS and industry activist BEVERLY KEEL are not having it...JACK WHITE kindly requests that there be more rock and roll in the world... Gold medalist JAMIE ANDERSON's Olympic playlist (speaking of Migos)... D'ARCY WRETZKY vs. the SMASHING PUMPKINS... RIP DARYLE SINGLETARY, VIC DAMONE, ENSAYNE WAYNE and WESLA WHITFIELD... Thoughts, prayers and devil's horns to JUDAS PRIEST's GLENN TIPTON. | | - Matty Karas, curator |

Last week, an unusual thing happened: A vocal group named Bluff City cracked the Top 30 on the Adult R&B chart with their song "Let Me Show You." Rakeem, Trevante, Roney, and Frank are young, unsigned and rash enough to form a group in a decidedly hostile climate for ensembles. | |
