| rantnrave:// Remember when APPLE MUSIC was well on its way to catching up to, surpassing and maybe crushing SPOTIFY in subscriber numbers?... Remember when the fourth-biggest moneymaker for UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP was a BEATLES album? This was way back in 2018, btw... Remember that time MARSHMELLO played a live DJ set inside FORTNITE? Were you one of the 10.7 million people playing Fortnite that day—two and a half million more than had ever showed up in Fortnite before? (Three weeks ago, fyi.). Who's got next on that DJ gig?... Remember when you couldn't listen to certain songs on the internet because you were in the wrong country? Actually, that's still happening... The only MONKEE I've ever seen live was PETER TORK, in a suburban Boston club during his brief new-wave phase. It was not very good. I've never held that against him. He was a searcher, a smartie, a true talent, looking perhaps for one last road out of wherever he was at the time, before the world was ready for his old faux-band-turned-real-band to reunite. He had been the Monkees' court jester on TV and one of their musical bedrocks everywhere else, playing bass, keyboards, guitar and banjo, and singing, when given the chance, better than you remember. He was the guy who never got his due in a band that never got its due. Here he is playing piano and duetting with DAVY JONES on a great BARRY MANN/CYNTHIA WEIL ballad, "SHADES OF GRAY." Later, he helped lead the band down weirder paths, which did little for the Monkees' popularity at the time but has a lot to do with why they're fondly remembered now. A friend remembers him being dressed in leopard print at that club show, which sounds about right. That's what you would have worn, too. RIP... His bandmates pay their respects... RIP also FRED FOSTER, LEWIS KAHN, DOMINICK ARGENTO and EARL SHUMAN... It's FRIDAY and that means new music from OFFSET, GARY CLARK JR., LIL PUMP, SLEAFORD MODS, OUR NATIVE DAUGHTERS, KEHLANI, GIGGS, HIGHER BROTHERS, YOLA, GUNNA, ADIA VICTORIA, THOM YORKE, SHIVA FESHAREKI, SPELLING, LET'S PET, BENNY SINGS, TELEKINESIS, BADFLOWER, SMIF-N-WESSUN, the CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM, JULIA JACKLIN, JAMES YORKSTON, MXMJOY, ROBERT STILLMAN, LOUIS FUTON, DREAM THEATER, DU BLONDE, DESPERATE JOURNALIST, VANDOLIERS and AND THE KIDS. | | - Matty Karas, curator |
