rantnrave:// Yes I called my boss after this news broke. To congratulate him and ask some questions. Which he politely said he couldn't answer. Public company and all that. Plus, he's new. And he probably has questions, too. We REDEFers are question-askers. These are some of mine: How does PANDORA maintain co-founder TIM WESTERGREN's core values and musical passion in a post-Westergren world? How does one of the kings of music discovery hold onto its crown in an increasingly crowded music-discovery market? How does the music biz respond and what does that mean for Pandora's artist relationships? Does the new management stay invested in on-demand streaming? Does that enhance the core radio product or is it a distraction? Which one's hiding the potential profits? (Also, and this is a question for everybody, not just Pandora, can anyone make money doing this?) (Seriously, can anyone?) What's the future of radio in an on-demand world? Do people want to lean in and lean back on the same service, or do they want different services for different leans? Do 80 million users—and radio users are loyal users—want change or the comfort of not changing? Where do the next 10 or 20 million users come from? Will Pandora and new investor SIRIUS XM, both key players in the car radio market, find the synergy to turn themselves into a highway dream team? (And if so, which one's CURRY and which one's DURANT?) Does anyone else on the board live for music as much as JASON does? Can I get just a little less CARRIE UNDERWOOD on the WOMEN IN COUNTRY RADIO station?... Speaking of the crowded music-discovery market, STATIONHEAD is an intriguing idea—an app that lets you turn your SPOTIFY account into a personal radio station. Whatever you're listening to, anyone can else can listen to in real time. It's a little more complicated than that. But not really. The music plays on each of your followers' Spotify accounts, so if you have a million followers, one play of one song could register as a million streams. Which sounds like an economic game-changer but I'm not so sure it's one we should celebrate. It doesn't change the amount of money in Spotify's coffers, so every extra dollar of royalties for an artist with those million followers is one less dollar for an artist with a smaller footprint... TWITTER has suspended the accounts of THE FADER, PIGEONS & PLANES and two other music sites, possibly for tweeting footage from the BET AWARDS on Sunday and the NBA AWARDS on Monday. The sites were still down as of late Tuesday night... Two more summer festivals canceled, because of economics and the environment... Two beautifully rendered appreciations of the great jazz pianist GERI ALLEN, one written by ETHAN IVERSON two weeks ago and one by DAVID R. ADLER as her obituary. She died Tuesday at age 60. RIP... Get well soon, MELODY PROCHET.
