| rantnrave:// How many people who helped foment musical revolutions are planning on dying this week? SCOTTY MOORE, who died TUESDAY, wasn't just the last living link to ELVIS PRESLEY's initial volcanic eruption. He was, in many ways, the very volcano from which singles like "THAT'S ALL RIGHT," "BABY LET'S PLAY HOUSE" and "MYSTERY TRAIN" erupted. His reverb-drenched rockabilly guitar was the electric prod in the drummerless trio of ELVIS, MOORE and bassist BILL BLACK; it's one of the cornerstones of all of rock and roll. He was also, as rockabilly guitarist DEKE DICKERSON notes in this essential profile, ELVIS's bandleader and first manager: "the man who drove the man who would be King through the lonely highways of the Deep South, chasing a dream that ELVIS alone would take to the bank. He is, more than anything, the archetype of the silent but steady sideman." You know the type. It was not God who gave rock and roll to you. It was men like MOORE. And men he learned from. And men he taught. But for a few crucial years in a few crucial studios, on a few world-changing 45-RPM singles, it all seemed to crystallize on the strings of MOORE's own guitar... YOUTUBE says its content ID function detects audio files uploaded to the service with "99.7% precision." Label execs say it's more like 50%. That's not a rounding error or a small disagreement. That's one side saying blue and the other side saying squirrel, with tens of millions of acorns, I mean dollars, caught somewhere in the middle. Playlists are a dime a dozen these days. Cheap and charming, updated by algorithm or "curated by hand," the grab bag anchors this post-album, post-download, post-mixtape moment. Still, we don't think you'll find anything quite like this list of 100 songs. Beyonce's here; so is Bowie. | |

Ever feel like there're no new artists today as good as the great ones from the good ol' days? Do your playlists still include mostly hits from the previous millennium? Do your kids give you facepalms every time you crank up “Free Bird”? Let’s face it: You’re in a classic rock rut. But there is hope. | |
