Wow! 2016 World Series champs. (Arturo Pardavila III)
Thursday - November 03, 2016 Thu - 11/03/16
rantnrave:// If you were a HOLLYWOOD screenwriter and you tried to script Wednesday night, you might have got away with the first game 7 leadoff homer in World Series history, and KYLE SCHWARBER's stolen base, and the JON LESTER wild pitch that dazed DAVID ROSS and scored two runs, and 39-year-old Ross recovering minutes later with a 406-foot blast to center field, and the INDIANS coming back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth off AROLDIS CHAPMAN when by all rights the Series should have been over, and one of the most nail-biting scoreless ninth innings in years—but the rain? There is no way you would have got away with the rain. When the skies opened up and the grounds crew rolled out the tarp after nine innings of a deciding game between two teams that hadn't won in a combined 176 years, that's when you knew you were in the realm of the impossible, or maybe chapter 10 of a previously unknown W.P. KINSELLA novel. And then of course the skies would magically dry out and you would let the CUBS have a faint glimmer of hope with two runs in the 10th—even the most diehard CHICAGO fan knew that couldn't last—and then, after two quick outs in the bottom of the 10th, your cameras would linger on the faces of those diehard fans while the INDIANS made it a one-run game and brought the potential winning run to the plate. And then, and then—we waited 108 years for this? Yes. And we will be telling stories about this night for at least another 108 years... Fare thee well, DAVID ROSS and JOHN HIRSCHBECK... Fourteen weeks till pitchers and catchers... Republican THEODORE ROOSEVELT was president the last time the Cubs won the Series. A month later, Republican WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT defeated Democrat WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN to become the 26th president in an election that divided the country along a North/South axis. The Democrat swept the Southern states, the Republican the Northern states. It's safe to say the election next Tuesday is going to unfold differently. REDEF has no intention of telling you how to vote, but we are going to use this space to urge you to go to the polls and exercise one of the most important rights any citizen has. Please check out our REDEF MediaSET "Voting Matters" for essays and anecdotes about the power of the ballot... RIP JUNKO TABEI.

It had to end this way: Cubs champions in thrilling, unforgettable Game 7
by Paul Sullivan
It had to end like this, after a 108-year drought that consumed Cubs fans and vexed experts for decade after decade. It had to end with the Cubs beating the Indians 8-7 in 10 innings in Game 7 of the World Series, in a ballpark occupied by thousands of road-tripping Cubs fans, on a summer-like night in November.

Hell didn't freeze over for Cleveland, but we still witnessed an Indian Summer
by Zack Meisel
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- We should have known by the mercury in the thermometer, the sunglasses, the return of outdoor patio seating and the mad dashes to the bottom of the dresser to locate the shorts that had just began their annual hibernation period. Hell hasn't frozen over, and there will be no second Cleveland major professional championship in 2016.

If you aren’t familiar with cricket, it can be a difficult game to follow. There are a number of elements similar to baseball, paired with others that are utterly unique and sometimes baffling. It can be difficult to understand what strategies the players are pursuing, and even fundamental questions like “who is winning?” don’t always have simple answers.

The inside story of Zach Randolph's move to the bench
by Chris Mannix
For an NBA star, change can be difficult. Accepting certain realities can be hard. If Allen Iverson were willing to come off the bench, the former MVP might have tacked an extra few years onto his career; Latrell Sprewell turned down a three-year, $21 million extension from Minnesota before the 2004-05 season -- and didn’t play again after it.
