| When voluntary assisted dying (VAD) became legal in WA in 2021 I held a special Spotlight forum to examine how this historic legislation would work.
Three years on, I'm putting the spotlight back on VAD.
In this forum I'll examine if the system is working well, are there enough medical staff to meet demand and is anyone who wants to access it able to.
But, this discussion will also consider whether the criteria to access VAD should be widened, similar to what Canada has done.
Should VAD be available to people with serious and chronic physical conditions that are not terminal?
Should people with dementia or mental illness, or elderly people who no longer have the will to live be able to access VAD?
I acknowledge this may be a confronting and emotional discussion but it is an important one to have.
