Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Jonathan Swan

President Donald Trump sat down last week for an interview with Axios’ Jonathan Swan for what turned out to be a wild and fascinating back-and-forth with heated exchanges on a number of issues ranging from the coronavirus to Black Lives Matter.

There have been a few revealing and lauded interviews recently, notably Chris Wallace's for Fox. But the Swan interview may be the best anyone has seen in years, not just for the skill of the interviewer but for the reactions of the president and even for the news and shockwaves that followed.

Here are some of the most noteworthy, even stunning moments.

Trump was defensive and characteristically narcissistic. He defended the Tulsa rally. He went off about how testing for Covid is ruining everything for him, eliciting a shocked reaction from Swan. He stood by his remarks about Ghislaine Maxwell, bizarrely. He dismissed the late Rep. John Lewis as merely someone who failed to attend Trump's inauguration

In short, even for Trump it was surprising enough that the reaction nearly speaks for itself.

This is in part the product of Trump's total unpreparedness (another quality he possesses in abundance), having spent years enjoying timid or softball interviews and carefully managing who he does and does not speak to.

And in even larger part it's thanks to Swan being forthright, not dancing, following-up, challenging, and all without being nasty, sneering, haughty, or hostile. The ability to conduct a strong interview without coming off like a total jerk isn't as common as you think, as anyone who watches media as much as we do can attest.

Swan more than pulled it off. Truly an impressive and memorable interview, one for the books.

MEDIA LOSER:
Chuck Todd

As the 2020 election draws near in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, MSNBC is about to commence a major overhaul for their programming lineup.

The network has announced — in moves first reported by Variety, and confirmed by Mediaite — that on Aug. 17, Meet The Press Daily will move to 1 p.m. ET, where it will continue to be hosted by Chuck Todd.

Todd will also host a new weekly political program next month on NBC News NOW, the network’s 24-hour live-streaming outlet which will air on NBC Universal’s new streaming platform, Peacock.

That's being touted and packaged like good news for the host, but it's plainly not a promotion.

Nicolle Wallace will be taking over Todd's former primo spot. Her Deadline: White House will be expanding to a two-hour show from 4 to 6, versus her previous 4 to 5 leading into MTP Daily.

Wallace will now be up against Fox's The Five and CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer  making her the lead-in for the primetime and evening shows rather than the lead in to Todd, and puts her in one of the most important competition slots.

Talk of "demoting" Todd to the morning or afternoon has been floating for some time. Wallace's ratings at 4 have been far more exciting than his at 5. Taking him off the 5 p.m. hour in an election year is an especially hard kick.

That kick didn't go unnoticed on social media. And the notice wasn't pretty. In fact his name was trending on Twitter yesterday and not in a good way.

Getting shuffled to earlier in the day, in a huge election year, replaced by the expansion of the show that used to be his opening act, and then trashed for it on Twitter?

Not a good Chuck Todd day.

The A-Block

Briefings Briefings

President Donald Trump's Covid-19 briefing on Monday was combative.

He was confronted by Jeff Mason of Reuters over his having bashed Dr. Deborah Birx for her interview comments.

He said he may take national action to halt evictions, as a result of the pandemic.

CNN's Jim Acosta characterized it as consisting of "one whopper after another."

Sean Hannity and Kayleigh McEnany talked about the press and their interactions with Trump, with Hannity suggesting that Trump just stop talking to them.

McEnany held her own briefing on Tuesday, She got into a battle with PBS reporter Yamiche Alcindor over the latter being skipped for a question.

And she was confronted over Trump's newfound love of mail-in voting (in ONE place). See below.

Nevermind!

President Trump U-turned on his original warnings about mail-in voting as the source of all that is bad in the universe when he suddenly tweeted on Tuesday that people in Florida should go ahead do just that.

Needless to say, people noticed the shift

Scorched Earth.

An MSNBC producer who resigned last month published a scathing resignation letter Monday in which she blasted the television news industry for blocking “diversity of thought and content” while amplifying “fringe voices and events … all because it pumps up the ratings.”

“I don’t know what I’m going to do next exactly but I simply couldn’t stay there anymore,” former producer Ariana Pekary wrote in the must-read letter.

"Please don't shoot me"

Shocking new police bodycam footage of George Floyd’s fatal arrest, which was originally leaked by The Daily Mail, shows he was begging for his life at gunpoint within 25 seconds of his arrest.

Bernie-Biden Communist Manifesto

Trump 2020 Communications Director Erin Perrine called former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign manifesto the “Bernie-Biden Communist Manifesto” during a Fox News debate with DNC War Room spokeswoman Lily Adams on Tuesday.

Fox News Dominates Fridays

Fox News dominated Friday’s cable news ratings in the last day of July, as CNN eked out a victory in the daytime demo of A25 – 54 viewers.

Fox trounced CNN and MSNBC in primetime, with Tucker Carlson Tonight topping all of cable news with 3.40 million total viewers and 524,000 viewers in the demo.

In second, Fox News again. And in third and fourth, more Fox News.

TikTok

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro scoffed at Microsoft Monday amid reports the company is seeking to purchase TikTok, the video application owned by a Chinese company.

In an interview with Fox News’ Sandra Smith, Navarro ripped the app by listing the security and privacy concerns connected to it. Navarro swatted down the idea of Microsoft as a remedy and bashed the company as "enablers of Chinese censorship and surveillance."

Tik Toxic

Former Ellen DeGeneres Show producer Hedda Muskat spoke out against Ellen DeGeneres in an interview published Monday — claiming she had never been around such a “toxic host.”

Muskat’s claims come after DeGeneres issued an apology to her staff following allegations of racism and other toxic and discriminatory actions at the hands of producers of her show.

Gigantic Beirut Blast

A MASSIVE explosion in Beirut dominated social media midday Tuesday as dozens of stunning and shocking videos from the city were shared on social media.

It's hard to overstate the visual impact of the photos and videos that were shared. It was a truly enormous blast, felt hundreds of miles away in Cyprus.

Watch the clips here, and check for updates on the cause and aftermath.
