| | | | a table full of treats and fellowship at the girl's house | High Tea at The Joy House | The Girl's Home hosted a wonderful tea this month for some of our staff and volunteer ladies. They impressed everyone with their hostess skills including preparing a wide variety of homemade treats, setting a beautiful table and having lovely conversations with one another. One of our school volunteers, Kay Bechtel, shared that she "had a great time of fellowship and it was a blessing as always to see how the girls are growing in their walk and maturity in Christ!" New houseparent, Jane Sherry, helped the girls prepare for the event and stated that "the girls worked hard for their tutors and the other ladies in appreciation for the time that was devoted to them. They worked tirelessly for four days preparing foods and enjoyed their afternoon as much as their guests." Click Here for a Short Video Slideshow of the Tea | |
| | some of the joy house academy staff and students | School During Summer? | Many of our supporters are curious about The Joy House Academy's summer schedule. Here at The Joy House, residents attend our fully accredited private school year-round with intermittent breaks throughout the year. While there are some practical reasons for this, such as providing our houseparents time off during the day, there are many benefits for our residents by having continued education throughout the year. Our Director of Education, Ron Rucker, believes that the year-round schedule keeps our residents in an "educational mindset" and removes the need for review as a student enters into a new school year. What the majority of our residents seem to enjoy the most is the ability to catch up or get ahead in their education in an efficient time frame. Having a year-round school means a year-round of opportunities for volunteers to tutor our residents in various subjects, to provide educational opportunities such as sharing a skill or facilitating a field trip to your place of business, and/or aiding the school by providing supplies or even a lunch for the residents. If you would like more information about these opportunities, please contact our Education Director, Ron Rucker via e-mail at ron@thejoyhouse.org. | |
| | Fresh picked cherry tomatoes and bush green beans from the joy house garden | Garden Goodies | This month we have finally begun to harvest some vegetables from our Joy House garden. The residents and staff have been able to enjoy homegrown tomatoes, corn, summer squash, green beans, cucumbers and jalapenos thus far, and are looking forward to harvesting watermelon, eggplant, bell peppers and pumpkin before the season is through. We are so grateful to the various individuals and groups that have helped us with our gardening endeavors by donating their time, supplies and gardening expertise. Not only does the garden provide a wonderful opportunity for our residents to learn about plants, nutrition and the joy of eating "fruits from their labor" but it also provides a therapeutic space for those residents and staff who take part in the nurturing of the plants. | |
| | Members of Living word church praying with our residents and staff | Thank you, Living Word! | Living Word Church blessed our ministry by visiting with our residents on July 11th. The visit included a concert by the Living Word Kids, fellowship with the Living Word Awaken ministry while making s'mores over our fire pit, and each resident being provided with a goody bag. Thank you, Living Word, for showing the love of Christ in our community! Click Here for More Information on Living Word Church... | |
