| rantnrave:// There's a group of people we've got our eyes on as the COUNTRY RADIO SEMINAR (CRS) kicks off in Nashville today: the country music radio programmers who need to react to KACEY MUSGRAVES winning Album of the Year at the GRAMMY AWARDS. Her single "RAINBOW" dropped on YOUTUBE, where she picked up a 1700% spike in views, the day after the awards and has officially been serviced since last week. So, are you planning to test it? MARISSA R. MOSS breaks down for ROLLING STONE why Musgraves and her label decided to follow their arrow and not work GOLDEN HOUR to radio after the format ignored her first two albums. To a lot of folks, that looks like it fits into the country radio pattern of not playing women, who make up a mere 10.4% of country playlists. Musgraves has gotten that treatment for her whole career, with only a few singles charting on country radio at all. In BILLBOARD, MCA NASHVILLE execs break down the intense process they went through in selecting and packaging "Rainbow, and so far it's paying off, with 53 stations adding it, a career high. But the magazine also has a program director quoted on how her previous singles, "SPACE COWBOY" and "BUTTERFLIES," were "a little too far out there" for country radio. If a song with a slide guitar and another with the lyrics "You can have your space, cowboy / I ain't gonna fence you in / Go on ride away, in your Silverado" aren't country enough, it's hard to say what is. Don't let one of the best artists of the decade and a future legend of the genre pass you by... This JASON ISBELL and FATHER JOHN MISTY co-headlining tour is the far too clever but still endearing aesthetic I want to cultivate in 2019, and the stage banter is sure to be worth the price of admission... No one in music is getting paid, it seems. This tease of a forthcoming book, SPOTIFY TEARDOWN: INSIDE THE BLACK BOX OF STREAMING MUSIC, whet my appetite to know what a team of researchers found when they set up a fake label to gather intel on SPOTIFY's finances. And PITCHFORK investigates how TIKTOK, a platform worth three times as much as Spotify, is getting bands and labels to give them music at low or no cost. Sure, you're seeing a payout on other streaming platforms from the TikTok bounce, but is it wise not to monetize? Let's ask DINOSAUR JR., whose "big in Japan" mystery is solved: it was all about nostalgia and accounting for all sources of streaming, even if they were pirated... Not sure you can totally reinvent the love song, but you can give it a makeover. The less heteronormative, less fixated on sex love songs that obsess on the idea of connection that millennials are about sound like a bop to me. | | - Courtney E. Smith, guest curator |
