Apart from a two-year stint in New York to complete a master’s in divinity, he spent the rest of his life there, campaigning for its poor, marginalized Black residents. Soon after arriving, Sherrod arranged anti-segregation protests that caught the attention of the nation — but the town’s white community pushed back.
