Kashmir’s Evolving Triangle: India, Pakistan, and China’s Growing Presence

Tensions between India and Pakistan have risen again following an attack on April 22 in Indian-administered Kashmir that left 26 civilians dead. In response, New Delhi imposed diplomatic and administrative sanctions, including suspending visas and cooperation on the Indus Waters Treaty. This escalation comes against the backdrop of a longstanding dispute over Kashmir, which has already triggered decades of instability.

What sets this crisis apart is the deepening role of a third actor: China. Historically, China has shown a strong interest in the Kashmir region and remains an important stakeholder in this contested area. Once cautious about getting involved, Beijing now backs Pakistan more openly economically, diplomatically, and militarily. The $62 billion China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), part of the Belt & Road Initiative, runs through disputed Kashmir territory, giving China a direct stake in the region’s (in)stability. Since India’s 2019 revocation of Kashmir’s autonomy, China has condemned New Delhi’s actions and strengthened its military posture along the disputed border. The 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which left 20 Indian soldiers dead, highlighted a new reality: India now faces a two-front challenge with Pakistan to the west and China to the east. For Pakistan, China’s backing offers political cover and strategic leverage.

These shifting dynamics mark a turning point in the Kashmir conflict. What was once a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan is now shaped by a third influential actor. As India navigates mounting pressure on two fronts and Islamabad deepens its ties with Beijing thanks to the Belt and Road Initiative, the region enters a new phase of uncertainty.
