Hello again, Tiger fans. Before you dive into your summer weekend plans, we've got a fistful of LSU sports items to fill you in on, starting with the latest football Tiger to don the special No. 7 jersey: Football LSU announced Thursday that wide receiver Kayshon Boutte will switch from the No. 1 to the No. 7 jersey this season. A lot is made of the player who gets to wear the No. 18 jersey, but frankly the No. 7 is THE most decorated number in LSU football history. No less that seven All-Americans have worn No. 7 for the Tigers — Bert Jones, Trev Faulk, Ali Highsmith, Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette and Grant Delpit — more All-Americans than any other number. Boutte has a chance to be the eighth if he can overcome last season's injuries and regain the form that made him a Freshman All-American in 2020. In other big football news, LSU has picked up a key offensive line commitment for its rapidly expanding 2023 class, and our Wilson Alexander tells us the story of new LSU wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton and his brother, fellow New Orleans native Cordae, who's coaching running backs at UNC Charlotte. Track and field The world championships begin Friday in Eugene, Oregon, as as you'd expect LSU's always talented program is well represented. Our Sheldon Mickles also catches us up with former LSU sprinter and New Orleans native Aleia Hobbs, the 2020 Olympic silver medalist who is finally ready to shine individually after a long wait. Basketball Men's basketball coach Matt McMahon talked to The Advocate about building the foundation for his new program. Friday, by the way, is exactly 117 days since his hiring in March and LSU's season opener Nov. 9 against Missouri-Kansas City. Baseball Where did former Tiger pitcher Jacob Hasty wind up? Find out here. By the Numbers With 51 days until LSU's Sept. 4 season opener against Florida State, we take you back to the 1930s and tell you about one of the Tigers' earliest and most dashing stars: Ken Kavanaugh Sr. As always, thanks for reading! Until next time, Scott Rabalais |
