The Thread's Must Read | What You're Reading! Occasionally, I hunt down book lovers near and far — at the gym, at work, in book clubs, on Twitter — and I ask which book is both surprising and delighting them. And wow! The titles rolled in! There are some I’ve missed, some I loved, too, and some that deserve an extra shoutout. My bookie friends have clearly helped make Margaret Atwood’s “The Testaments” the global best-seller that it is. It’s a sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale” and it returns us to Gilead, a future version of the United States subjugated under totalitarian rule where women are impregnated by commanders, and dissenters are disappeared. People are also reading Richard Powers’ “Overstory” and that makes me so happy. My interview with Powers about his own experience in nature and the science of arboreal empathy and communication is well worth a listen. A listener named Emily tweeted that she’s reading “In the Dream House” by Carmen Maria Machado, a candid and innovative memoir that describes love and cruelty, survival and resilience. Several friends wrote to tell me they were reading Ann Patchett’s latest, “The Dutch House," and since I read everything that Ann Patchett writes this is on my list, too. Other answers include Alice Hoffman's “The World That We Knew," Saeed Jones’ memoir, “How We Fight for Our Lives," “Heaven My Home” by Attica Locke, “She Said” by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, and Jacquira Diaz’ “Ordinary Girls,” which is on my “to be read soon” list, too. You can always tell me what you're reading on Twitter @kerrimpr. -Kerri Miller |
