Climate Solutions Campaign Kicks Off

Grades of Green has officially launched our NEW Climate Solutions Campaign and it's off to an incredible start! We have more than 300 students and 60 teams signed up with new registrations rolling in every day. We spent the summer improving every aspect of the campaign to help our students create a brighter, greener future.

  • We expanded the Campaign to focus on the climate crisis
  • We extended the Campaign from a single semester to a full school-year
  • We increased the amount of content, activities and instruction throughout the campaign
  • We updated our distribution platform to allow students to complete the campaign 100% online so that they can continue to take action while staying safe at home during the coronavirus pandemic

If you know a student who cares about the environment, is looking to build their college resume and meet their service hour requirements virtually, direct them here to learn more about the Climate Solutions Campaign and sign up.

Grades of Green was thrilled to learn that student Eco-Leader and Campaign alum, Beatrice Ongawn, was awarded the prestigious Women in Transportation 2020 college scholarship! When we presented Beatrice our Student Leadership Award for leading her team during the Water Campaign in the fall of 2019, we knew she was going to go far! Her Grades of Green Advisor, Cathy Procopio, was thrilled to write Beatrice a letter of recommendation and explain the amazing art project that Beatrice’s team made to raise awareness about plastic pollution. The team displayed their project at school and in the showroom of Subaru Pacific, a long-time Grades of Green supporter. The whole team is so proud of you, Beatrice!

First-Ever Virtual Campaign Trainings

are a Huge Success!

Welcome Webinar

We’ve always dreamed of kicking off our Campaigns with a gathering of students. This year, we were able to do so virtually! Grades of Green was excited to greet nearly 100 students during our Welcome Webinar on Saturday, October 3rd. During the webinar, students explored the causes of the climate crisis, its impacts, and the environmental justice issues at stake. We also gave students a detailed overview of what they can expect to accomplish during the Campaign. Students from more than seven US states and six countries attended the webinar and we cannot wait to see what innovative, impactful projects they will tackle!

Team Facilitator Training

The Climate Solutions Campaign’s virtual Team Facilitator Training was held on Saturday, September 26, and we were thrilled with the awesome turnout that included more than 30 teams! Each student team is supported by an adult Team Facilitator that helps them navigate the challenges they'll face on their Campaign journey. We know that these Team Facilitators – who are often teachers – regularly spend their time and money to help our students succeed, so we’re excited to provide more than 25 of these team facilitators a $500 stipend for completing the training and leading a team to complete their project!

With everything going on in the world, it's easy to overlook the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on educators and their students. As we kick off the campaign, we've had a chance to connect with teachers across the country and we keep hearing the same thing: teachers desperately need exciting, new ways to engage their students virtually and our Climate Solutions Campaign is the perfect fit.

As more and more teams register for the campaign, we need your help to make sure we can meet the rising demand. It costs Grades of Green $2,800 to support a single student team and we are proud to provide these services for FREE at no cost to students, educators, or schools. Please help Grades of Green support more student teams by donating today.

LACSD Virtual Field Trip

Understanding that our students are not able to attend the usual in-person field trips this year, we knew we had to bring an interactive educational experience to them! We teamed up with our long-time supporters at the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County for an exciting virtual look into the San Jose Creek Water Treatment Plant and their food waste recycling programs. We had a fantastic turn out of more than 150 students who had super thoughtful questions, many of which may have been inspired for their Climate Solutions Campaign topics!
