It's Tuesday, May 2, and today's headlines include a CDC report on high school students' sexuality, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressing opposition to men competing in women's sports, and PCUSA reporting substantial membership losses in 2022. | | One in four high school students in the United States identify as homosexual, bisexual or are questioning their sexuality, per the latest edition of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. While 74.2% of respondents claimed to be heterosexual, 11.9% identified as bisexual, 3.2% as gay or lesbian and 9% as "other/questioning." Data compiled by Gallup shows that younger generations are more likely to identify as LGBT, with nearly one in five Gen Zers considering themselves part of the LGBT community. By contrast, just 11.3% of millennials identify as members of the LGBT community, followed by 3.3% of members of Generation X, 2.7% of baby boomers and 1.7% of the silent generation. | Pastor calls out UMC's closure of small church | | Pastor Douglas Theobald of Struthers United Methodist Church in Ohio is denouncing a UMC regional body's decision to close the church later this month. Theobald told CP that Struthers' Staff Parish Relations Committee met with their district superintendent to discuss reports that the congregation was struggling financially. Despite explaining this was not true, the district superintendent requested a review of the last 10 years of the church's operations. Subsequent meetings became increasingly hostile, per Theobald, and despite a charge conference overwhelmingly opposing closure, a district Land and Buildings committee voted to shut the church down on May 21. | Kirk Cameron cries tears of hope at story hour event | | A New Jersey story hour event brought Kirk Cameron to tears, with the Christian actor and author saying the gathering's impromptu praise and worship made him cry "tears of gratitude and hope." The story hour, which saw approximately 700 people in attendance, marked Cameron's 10th story hour event at the Cherry Hill Library.
