Waldo was a personable fellow. Orange through and through, he pranced into our family one Christmas Day. We lived in the countryside back then, where most pet cats and dogs roamed freely. Waldo almost immediately established his territory by keeping both large and small animals at bay, and searched and destroyed almost anything else that looked fearsome within our property lines.

One day, he ate Freddy the tarantula.

When my former husband’s beloved pet, Freddy, died, he paid a taxidermist to have it stuffed. The next year, Waldo discovered Freddy standing on our desk. One night after work, I discovered Waldo, still an adorable kitten, big-bellied and belching in the midst of a circle of crunchy tarantula legs. (Keep reading)
