TOP OF THE AGENDA | Russian drone and missile attack hits Kyiv |
| | A residential building was among those damaged in a Russian drone attack overnight. Credit: Reuters | Ukraine's authorities reported that Russian drone strikes hit eight districts in Kyiv in the early hours of Thursday morning, killing at least two people and injuring 16. BBC Verify's Emma Pengelly has been analysing some of the footage shared on social media. The latest strikes followed what Ukraine described as the largest Russian aerial attack on Tuesday night. As Paul Adams notes, these developments underline just how remote the prospect of a diplomatic breakthrough in the three-year war seems to have become, even as a two-day conference on Ukraine's recovery, attended by delegates of 77 countries, begins in Rome. |

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | China's emissions drop marks milestone |
| | | Much of the decrease in emissions can be put down to countrywide investments in wind and solar. Credit: Getty Images | China is currently responsible for some 30% of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. But in what would represent a milestone for efforts to tackle climate change, emissions appear to have declined in the 12 months up to May 2025, even as demand for power across the economy grew rapidly. |
