HIGH TIMES: Medical marijuana is rapidly gaining popularity in Louisiana. More patients joined the program than ever before in the first three months of this year, which coincided with the more popular smokable flower products becoming legal Jan. 1. And the number of prescriptions bought by those patients soared to unprecedented levels, up almost 600% from the same period last year.
SELF-PROTECTION: Under the Louisiana congressional district map that the Legislature adopted over Gov. John Bel Edwards' veto, the Black voting age population in the 2nd District is 59%, a comfortable level for incumbent Troy Carter of New Orleans, the state's only Black member of Congress. The rejected map, with two Black districts, would have that figure to about 52%, which some legislative insiders say is why Carter failed until just before the vote to voice full support for a second Black-majority district.
ACTION! Second Line Stages, one of the largest television and film studio operators in Louisiana, is tripling the size of its Lower Garden District space as movie production again booms in New Orleans. The expansion reflects the scramble by both conventional production companies and streaming services for original content. There are currently 26 films or series in production in Louisiana, 22 of which are being made in New Orleans, state officials say.
