No referendum will be held in Catalonia "regardless of the intentions to impose one in a rushed, sloppy and illegal manner", says Mariano Rajoy

Following an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers that agreed to lodge an appeal against the illegal referendum on self-determination in Catalonia, the President of the Government of Spain stated that he will do "everything necessary" to defend the rule of law, national sovereignty and the peaceful coexistence of all Spaniards.

President of the Government receives Speaker of the National Assembly of Venezuela

The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, received the Speaker of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Julio Borges, at Moncloa Palace, accompanied by the First Deputy-Speaker of the Venezuelan Parliament, Freddy Guevara. Lilian Tintori, human rights activist and wife of the Venezuelan political prisoner, Leopoldo Lpez, was also due to take part in the meeting, but the Venezuelan authorities have regrettably banned her from leaving the country.

Government agrees to appeal against Transience Act of Catalonia before Constitutional Court

The government also decided to appeal against certain rules contained in the Tax Code Law of Catalonia that seeks to set up its own Treasury. Furthermore, it approved the Strategy to Internationalise the Spanish Economy 2017-2027 and the Comprehensive Plan to Boost the Competitiveness of Retail Trade.

Government appeals law passed by Regional Government of Catalonia to authorise referendum on self-rule before Constitutional Court

The government also challenged the decree to call the referendum, the complementary rules to carry this out and the appointment of the members of the Electoral Board.
