​Institutional declaration by President of the Government on situation in Catalonia

In his appearance at Moncloa Palace, the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, called for those responsible for the Regional Government of Catalonia to cease their illegal actions, the escalation of radicalism and disobedience and for them to return to legality and democracy. Spain, he said, has the necessary instruments to defend legality.

Mariano Rajoy asserts that "rule of law and democracy have worked" and "will continue to work"

During the Government Control Session in the Lower House of Parliament, the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, recalled that if we allow "the rules to be trampled on", we will only be "left with injustice and chaos". He also announced the creation of 300 new posts for judges and prosecutors in 2018.

Government reaffirms that 1 October referendum lacks democratic guarantees and will not be held

The government expressed its concern at the harassment in Catalonia of those who oppose the illegal referendum. It also reiterated that it will defend the constitutional principle of national sovereignty, the unity of Spain, political pluralism and the exercise of rights and liberties.
