Wanted: photographs, videos, stories about Indigenous activist Mary Two-Axe Earley

NSI alumni Courtney Montour (NSI IndigiDocs) and Kat Baulu (NSI Drama Prize) are currently developing a new NFB-produced documentary celebrating activist Mary Two-Axe Earley, the founder of Indian Rights for Indian Women (IRIW), who fought to end gender discrimination against Indigenous women and their children in the Indian Act.

Courtney is looking for archival material and personal stories related to Mary Two-Axe Earley and the work of Indian Rights for Indian Women.

Courtney also wants to hear from women who received ‘enfranchisement’ letters and cards – documents officially signalling the termination of their Indigenous identity.

The enfranchisement letter was sent to any Indigenous woman who married a non-Indigenous man, or an Indigenous man without status, informing her she was no longer considered Indigenous under the Indian Act, having lost her status by virtue of marriage.

Anthony Del Col’s graphic novel Son of Hitler set for May release

Writer Anthony Del Col (NSI Totally Television), New York Times bestselling cartoonist Jeff McComsey and co-writer Geoff Moore have teamed up for new original graphic novel, Son of Hitler which hits stores in May 2018.

The never-before-told story of Adolf Hitler’s secret child and how this son was the key to ending World War II is now revealed in this graphic novel based upon one of history’s most intriguing rumours.

In 1943 Nazi-occupied France, a rogue British S.O.E. agent recruits a young baker’s assistant for a dangerous mission by sharing with him a revelation no-one would ever want to hear: he is the biological son of Adolf Hitler.

Apply for TIFF Studio professional development, deadline April 20

There’s still time to apply to TIFF Studio – a unique opportunity for talented Canadians to hothouse their projects and build their understanding of the screen industry.

TIFF Studio provides up to 12 practitioners with a program of monthly workshops with Canadian and international experts on key topics and trends. Participants have peer to peer sessions and gain privileged access to the Toronto International Film Festival.

This year, the emphasis of the monthly workshops will be on writing and screen craft, including the development of adaptations and the creation of memorable characters.

Screenwriters and writer/directors are invited to apply by April 20 at 5 p.m.

If your film is programmed, you have a chance of winning the A&E Short Filmmakers Award for best film. We accept films released after January 1, 2013.

All NSI Online Short Film Festival winners receive a complimentary Friend membership for the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and are qualified to be nominated for a Canadian Screen Award (if award criteria are met).

Submit your film to the NSI Online Short Film Festival, deadline June 4

Submissions are now open for the National Screen Institute’s Online Short Film Festival. Films are accepted exclusively through FilmFreeway until Monday, June 4, 2018.

Films that meet award criteria are eligible for the $1,250 A&E Short Filmmakers Award for best film. Read about the most recent winners.

NSI Online Short Film Festival winners receive a complimentary Friend membership for the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and are qualified to be nominated for a Canadian Screen Award (if award criteria are met).

Submit your film.

Entries must be under 30 minutes – the shorter the better. Drama, comedy, animation, documentary, sci-fi, horror, music video and experimental are all eligible but must be made by a Canadian writer, director or producer. The festival accepts films released after January 1, 2013.

The NSI Online Short Film Festival is a year-round Canadian short film showcase with new films added every week. Since launching in 2008, the festival has programmed hundreds of films and awarded over $110K to Canadian media artists. Many of the films are available to watch in the archives.
