NSI Features First-developed Venus coming to theatres in Toronto, Vancouver

NSI Features First-developed Venus, from writer/director Eisha Marjara and producer Joe Balass, continues its theatrical run with dates in Toronto and Vancouver.

From May 18 through to May 24 Venus screens at Cineplex Yonge-Dundas in Toronto and from May 18 through to May 23 at Vancity Theatre in Vancouver.

Genders, generations and cultures collide in this comedy about the modern family unit, which follows a transitioning woman who discovers she’s the father of a 14-year-old boy.

NSI Features First is a development training launch pad for producer/writer teams looking to produce their first or second feature film with strong commercial appeal.

NSI grads win Writers Guild of Canada screenwriting awards

Congrats to the NSI grads who won at the 22nd annual Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Awards, held yesterday in Toronto.

NSI Script to Screen-developed Entanglement (pictured) by Jason Filiatrault won best feature film and Spiral episode “The Girl in the Dream” by Karen McClellan (NSI Totally Television) won for shorts and web series.

Sandi Somers named best filmmaker by Best of Calgary

Current NSI Features First student Sandi Somers has been named best filmmaker by the folks behind Best of Calgary.

She was recognized for her work as part of production company Spring Street Films and for her directing work on 2017 feature film Ice Blue.

Giltrude’s Dwelling from Jeremy Lutter screens at Not Short on Talent, Cannes

Giltrude’s Dwelling, a new film from Jeremy Lutter (NSI Drama Prize, NSI Features First), screens at this year’s Telefilm Canada Not Short on Talent showcase at Cannes.

Orphaned at the age of 11, Giltrude, an interdimensional shut-in, has waited 15 years for her parents to come home. When a life or death dilemma comes knocking, Giltrude must look beyond her front door and learn to face the outside universe.

Not Short on Talent provides recent Canadian short films with the opportunity to screen at international markets. The event happens as part of Cannes’ Short Film Corner, a market for short film professionals which takes place during the festival, May 14 to 19, 2018.

Three new films in this week’s NSI Online Short Film Festival from directors Lesley Johnson, John Ainslie and Craig Guiboche.

Princess Jack

A short documentary about the life of a boy with high-functioning autism whose life is filled with fairy tales and make-believe.

The story follows Jack as he sews his first princess ball gown, tailored for a debut at the Royal Ball. He introduces us to his particular tastes in costume wardrobe, carefully applies his costume makeup and patiently works his way through sewing classes.

This film is an intimate portrait of a unique and intelligent child, immersed in his own world and fully supported by his caring family and sewing teacher.

If your film is programmed, you have a chance of winning the A&E Short Filmmakers Award for best film. We accept films released after January 1, 2013.

All NSI Online Short Film Festival winners receive a complimentary Friend membership for the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and are qualified to be nominated for a Canadian Screen Award (if award criteria are met).

Your film must be less than 30 mins long. Drama, comedy, animation, documentary, sci-fi, horror, music video and experimental are all eligible and must be made by a Canadian writer, director or producer.
