Mongrel Media gets Canadian rights to Zoe Hopkins’ Kayak to Klemtu

Toronto-based Mongrel Media has picked up the Canadian rights to Kayak to Klemtu, the directorial debut of Canadian Heiltsuk/Mohawk filmmaker Zoe Hopkins (Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program). The film is produced by Scythia Films’ Daniel Bekerman (NSI Features First).

It follows a 14-year-old girl (Ta’Kaiya Blaney) and her family as they travel the shores of the Great Bear Rainforest by kayak to testify against a proposed crude oil pipeline.

The film is expected to open theatrically on May 25.

WIFT-Vancouver releases latest Producer’s Workbook and complementary online resources

Women in Film and Television Vancouver has just released the latest edition of their Producer’s Workbook: the Producer’s Workbook 5 (PW5).

Since 1989, the Producer’s Workbook has been an invaluable roadmap to independent producers navigating their way through Canada’s ever-changing and complex production landscape.

Available in both ebook and paperback format, the PW5 covers each overlapping phase of production from development to distribution.

In addition, a subscription based online component, PW5 Online, has been created, including regularly updated downloadable forms and templates, reports and links to third-party resources. Each chapter of the PW5 has a corresponding set of online materials to help producers access the most current, relevant information.

Register for Winnipeg’s first Indigenous Film Summit, June 23

Registration is now open for Winnipeg’s inaugural Indigenous Film Summit, a first-of-its-kind event in Manitoba aimed at emerging and professional Indigenous directors, writers and producers.

The goal is to provide attendees with an understanding of funding opportunities, documentary producing, feature film development, crowdfunding education and networking with top industry professionals.

Created and organized by members of Winnipeg’s Indigenous Filmmakers Association, the event will feature keynote speakers Jesse Wente (Canada’s Indigenous Screen Office), ​Ian Skorodin and Patricia Gomes (LA Skins Film Festival), Erica Daniels (CBC New Indigenous Voices grad and producer, Kejic Productions) and film director Louise Big Eagle.

The event is organized by NSI grads Roger Boyer, Justina Neepin and Charlene Moore (all CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs).

Early bird registration cost is $75 ($100 after May 18) and includes a networking lunch and reception. Find out more and register.
