The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) congratulates the team behind SuperGrid on their world premiere at the 2018 Calgary International Film Festival.

SuperGrid was developed through NSI Features First in 2016 by producer Hugh Patterson and writer Todd McCauley. NSI Features First alumna Trinni Franke is also a producer on the film.

“NSI Features First continues to be among the most successful development and mentorship programs for emerging Canadian feature filmmakers,” said John Gill, CEO of NSI. “We’re thrilled with Hugh, Todd and Trinni’s success with SuperGrid and are proud to have been a vital part of the path it took to make this film.”

“It’s exciting to celebrate the premiere of SuperGrid at Calgary and to bring our film to festival audiences,” said Hugh and Todd. “We’re grateful to NSI and to the NSI Features First course and faculty for their belief in our project and support of this process.”

SuperGrid opens in an apocalyptic near-future, where mining conglomerates have turned Canada into a wasteland. A young smuggler is forced to convince his older brother to get back on the “grid” and help him deliver mysterious cargo. En route, they must contend with road pirates, rebel gangs, and each other, in this wildly entertaining ode to the post-apocalyptic sci-fi/action movies of the ’80s.

Production on SuperGrid took place in 2017 in and around Regina, Saskatchewan, where Hugh is based.

The film premieres Friday, September 21 at 9:45 p.m. at Calgary’s Cineplex Odeon Eau Claire. Director Lowell Dean (WolfCop) and Trinni will be in attendance. It plays again on September 23 at 12:30 p.m.
