Tracey Deer wins TIFF-CBC Films screenwriter prize for Beans

Co-writers Tracey Deer (NSI Storytellers, Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program, pictured above right) and Meredith Vuchnich have won the 2019 TIFF-CBC Films screenwriting prize for their project Beans.

Created to help support diverse screenwriters and fund the development of Canadian scripts, the award recognizes work that presents diverse perspectives via a Canadian experience. Beans is a coming-of-age story told from the perspective of a 12-year-old girl during the Oka Crisis.

TIFF also announced the 12 participants accepted to the 2019 TIFF Writer’s Studio – among them are Geoff Redknap (NSI Drama Prize, NSI Features First) and Lindsay Mackay (NSI Diverse TV Director). The five-day intensive provides mid-career screenwriters the chance to challenge themselves in a collaborative space.

Apply to WIFT-Vancouver feature film writing program for Indigenous women

Applications are now open for Vancouver-based Indigenous women to apply to Women in Film and Television (WIFT)-Vancouver’s Coyote, Raven, Spider, Wendigo: Tricksters and Writers feature film writing development program.

The three-phase program offers Indigenous women the opportunity to develop feature length screenplays. Screenwriter and producer Peggy Thompson (DramaLab) serves as a faculty member for the program, conducting writing seminars for the 10 selected participants alongside filmmaker Doreen Manuel. NSI IndigiDocs grad Petie Chalifoux is also an instructor for the course.

Five participants will be selected to move on to phases two and three of the program, which include one-on-one story editing and script workshops.

Applications are being accepted until March 1, 2019. Find out more and apply.

Molly McGlynn talks to The TV Junkies about directing episodic television

Molly McGlynn (NSI Drama Prize) recently talked to The TV Junkies about her career and the journey that led to her directing episodic television.

The interview is part of the series Women Behind Canadian TV.

Molly also covers the differences between directing films and TV and moving toward industry gender parity. Read the interview.

Earlier this month Molly won the Toronto Film Critics Association $10K Stella Artois Jay Scott Prize for an emerging artist.
