NSI alumni among 2020 WGC Screenwriting Award finalists

Congrats to NSI alumni with nominations for this year’s Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Awards.

The WGC Screenwriting Awards will recognize and celebrate Canadian screenwriters and their scripts at a gala ceremony on April 27, 2020 at Toronto’s Koerner Hall.

Second feature from Craig David Wallace now shooting in Toronto

Production on the feature horror Daughters is currently underway in Toronto. The film is directed by Craig David Wallace (NSI Totally Television) and co-written with Ian Malone. Laura Tremblay and Avi Federgreen are producers on the project.

In the film, Kate and her nine-year-old daughter Beth have moved into an old farmhouse outside a small town. Kate hopes this new beginning will shield her daughter from their horrible past: her husband Brad was convicted of murdering a young girl, based largely on Kate’s testimony. A mysterious couple invade their home demanding the truth in exchange for Beth’s safety: Kate has to confess that it was she, not her husband, who killed their daughter.

Craig developed Todd & the Book of Pure Evil with Anthony Leo through NSI Totally Television.

Sonya Ballantyne to present two-day workshop on public speaking

Sonya Ballantyne (CBC New Indigenous Voices, NSI IndigiDocs) will present a two-day workshop about public speaking on April 18 and 19 at Creative Manitoba in Winnipeg.

During the workshop you’ll learn to feel more comfortable promoting your work and gain confidence presenting your ideas.

The workshop costs $20 for members of Creative Manitoba and the Indigenous Film Association, and $50 for non-members.

Jeff Eyamie’s short So, What Do You Think? premieres at ACTRA Manitoba showcase on April 3

So, What Do You Think?, a short film by writer/director Jeff Eyamie (NSI Totally Television), is set to premiere at the ACTRA MB Member Initiated Production Showcase on April 3 at the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre in Winnipeg.

Melva McLean (NSI Drama Prize) was script supervisor and Cody Blacksmith (CBC New Indigenous Voices) was sound mixer/boom operator. The film stars Adam Hurtig and Ali Tataryn.

NSI CEO Joy Loewen receives black leadership award of distinction

NSI’s CEO Joy Loewen was honoured at the recent Afro Prairie Film Festival with a special leadership award.

Presented jointly by Afro Prairie Film Festival and Reelworld Screen Institute, Joy received the 2020 Black Leadership Award of Distinction in recognition of her outstanding efforts in the promotion and exhibition of Canadian art and artists.

The Afro Prairie Film Festival hosted on Treaty 1 Territory supports black filmmakers in Canada. In celebration of Black History Month, Black Space Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Film Group presented this festival celebrating black cinema across North America while promoting the work of established and emerging black filmmakers in Canada. The Afro Prairie Film Festival provides programming and education that explores black narratives on screen and behind the scenes.

Marie Clements picks up three awards at Vancouver International Women in Film Festival

Congratulations to Marie Clements (NSI Storytellers, Featuring Aboriginal Stories Program) for winning the IATSE Local 891 Award for Best Feature, the DGC BC Award for Best Direction and the CFA Award for Best Screenplay for her feature Red Snow at the 2020 Vancouver International Women in Film Festival.

Red Snow opens in select Cineplex theatres across Canada starting Friday, March 13.

In the film, Dylan, a Gwich’in soldier from the Canadian Arctic, is caught in an ambush in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His capture and interrogation by a Taliban Commander releases a cache of memories connected to the love and death of his Inuit cousin, Asana, and binds him closer to a Pashtun family as they escape across treacherous landscapes and through a blizzard that becomes their key to survival.
