Grand Unified Theory available on VOD, February 3

Grand Unified Theory, a feature from David Ray (NSI Features First, NSI Totally Television), will be available across North America and beyond on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon Direct VOD starting on Saturday, February 3.

In the film, the family of brilliant astrophysicist Albert James has a complete meltdown, setting in motion a raucous and hilarious series of events that mirror his radical theories of the behaviour of the universe.

Apply for Creative BC’s story department internship

BC-based TV writers: apply for the new CMPA-BC Story Department Internship from Creative BC and the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA).

Open to BC residents, the CMPA-BC Story Department Internship program provides funding for the skills development of professionals committed to careers in writing for dramatic television. It is aimed at mid-level professionals who want to progress to the next stage in their careers.

Screenwriting workshop with Melva McLean in Winnipeg, February 3

Register to attend an upcoming screenwriting workshop with Melva McLean (NSI Drama Prize) on Saturday, February 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University of Winnipeg, Lockhart Hall, Room 1L06.

In this introduction to writing for the screen, you’ll learn how to take an idea to an outline you can use to build your story.

There will be lots of time for questions and discussion around your individual ideas.

Melva has degrees from the University of Winnipeg and Simon Fraser University. She has been an editor for over 20 years, and writing screenplays for the past seven. Her scripts have won several awards and her short, Chopin’s Heart, was a NSI Drama Prize winner and part of Telefilm’s Not Short on Talent showcase at Cannes 2016.

Workshop cost is $100 ($75 for Manitoba Editors’ Association members) and online registration is encouraged.

NSI grads at Canada’s Top Ten Shorts event in Winnipeg, January 27

This Saturday, the Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque presents a program of short films from Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival including Flood from Amanda Strong and Bracken Hanuse Corlett (both NSI IndigiDocs).

A panel discussion on making films in Winnipeg will follow the screening and includes Ryan Wilson and Charlene Moore (both CBC New Indigenous Voices and NSI IndigiDocs).

The event happens Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m. and admission is free of charge.

NSI Totally Television phase two teams announced

Congratulations to the teams behind Degeneration and Wolfville, the two TV series concepts moving onto the second phase of NSI Totally Television.

Through the course, Alexandra Caulfield and Gemma Holdway of DeGeneration and Rob Ramsay and Jon Mann of Wolfville will continue to polish their TV projects with the assistance of industry mentors.

Phase two focuses more on the specific needs of each project with a three-day training session in Toronto in April 2018 and attendance at the Banff World Media Festival.

NSI Totally Television provides hands-on series development training for creative producer/writer teams serious about getting their television series concept made.
