Honesty
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Proverbs 12:22

"Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight."

Joseph F. Smith
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Joseph F. Smith

"We want you to be honest, not merely because it is the best policy, but because in so doing you honor God and you carry out His purposes in your lives; for 'an honest man,' it is an old, and perhaps a hackneyed, saying---'is the noblest work of God.' We want to be honest because we love God, and we cannot be the Saints of God [unless] we are. We should be good because we love to be good, and not because we fear the consequences of evil" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph F. Smith, p. 291).

DAILY READING SCHEDULE

Read the Book of Mormon in a year by following our Daily Reading Schedule.

TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY
April 5

1829 - Oliver Cowdery, feeling drawn to the Prophet Joseph, travels with Samuel Smith, the Prophets brother, and arrives on this date in Harmony, Pennsylvania. He meets Joseph Smith for the first time and within a few days was working as Joseph's scribe. Joseph had received a revelation telling him that the Lord would send him a scribe to complete the translation of the Book of Mormon. With Oliver's help, the translation went quickly and was completed in only a few months time.

1834 - The Prophet Joseph Smith travels to Chardon, Ohio, to serve as a witness for John Johnson (History of the Church, 2:47).

1838 - A group of eight men, which included John Whitmer, came into the office where the committee of removal met. They presented to Theodore Turley a copy of a revelation received by the Prophet Joseph Smith directing the Twelve Apostles to leave for their mission to England on April 26th from the Far West Temple site. They told brother Turley "let them come here if they dare; if they do, they will be murdered. As that revelation cannot be fulfilled, you will now give up your faith." Brother Turley jumped up and said, "In the name of God that revelation will be fulfilled." Brother Turley then asked John Whitmer about his testimony of the Book of Mormon. Whitmer replied, "I now say, I handled those plates; there were fine engravings on both sides. I handled them;' and he described how they were hung, and 'they were shown to me by a supernatural power.'" However, Whitmer stated he wasn't sure the translation was a correct translation of the plates because he couldn't read the engravings on the plates. (History of the Church, 3:307-308)

1843 - Joseph Smith sat with Nauvoo City Aldermen and associate-justices in "municipal court on a writ of habeas corpus, and discharged Jonathan and Lewis Hoopes from custody" (History of the Church, 5:326).

1844 - The Prophet Joseph attended the dedication of the Masonic Hall in Nauvoo, Illinois. It was dedicated by Hyrum Smith and was one of the finest Masonic facilities in the state. Today, the building has been restored and is known as the Cultural Hall.

1847 - The first pioneer wagons left Winter Quarters for the overland journey to the Great Basin with Elder Heber C. Kimball's six wagons in the lead. The group was led by Brigham Young and consisted of 143 men, 3 women, and 2 children.

1881 - Elder Moses Thatcher of the Quorum of the Twelve and President of the Mexico Mission, lead a group comprised of missionaries and some of the first converts in Mexico up the mountain Popocatepetl and dedicated Mexico for the preaching of the gospel.

1952 - The first transmission by direct wire of the priesthood session of general conference to buildings outside of Temple Square.

1996 - A group of LDS businessmen announce the purchase of Southern Virginia College and also announce a plan to establish it as a LDS based university.

1997 - President Gordon B. Hinckley announces the formation of the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Quorums of Seventy which are to be composed of Area Authority Seventies.
