SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
1 Nephi 7:12

"Yea, and how is it that ye have forgotten that the Lord is able to do all things according to his will, for the children of men, if it so be that they exercise faith in him? Wherefore, let us be faithful to him."

Wilford Woodruff
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Wilford Woodruff

"Almighty Father, increase within us the powers of that faith delivered to and possessed by thy Saints. Strengthen us by the memories of the glorious deliverances of the past, by the remembrance of the sacred covenants that thou hast made with us, so that, when evil overshadows us, when trouble encompasses us, when we pass through the valley of humiliation, we may not falter, may not doubt, but in the strength of thy holy name may accomplish all thy righteous purposes with regard to us, fill the measure of our creation, and triumph gloriously, by thy grace, over every besetting sin, be redeemed from every evil, and be numbered in the kingdom of heaven amongst those who shall dwell in thy presence forever" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Wilford Woodruff, p.158).

TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY
August 13

1831 - The Prophet Joseph Smith and his company, returning to Kirtland, Ohio, meet Hyrum Smith, John Murdock, Harvey Whitlock, and David Whitmer, who are on their way to Jackson County. The Prophet Joseph receives the revelation known as Doctrine and Covenants 62 informing the Elders that their testimonies are recorded in Heaven and that the angels rejoice over them. They are encouraged to continue their missionary labors. (History of the Church, 1:205-206)

1838 - While returning from Lyman Wight's house at the Forks of the Grand River to Far West, Joseph Smith and his group were chased ten or twelve miles by "evil designing men" but eluded them. About eight miles from Far West they were met by some brethren who informed the Prophet that Judge King had issued a writ for his arrest along with Lyman Wight. (History of the Church, 3:63)

1842 - Joseph requested Emma to come visit him while he was in seclusion to avoid being arrested and taken to Missouri illegally. The sheriff noticed her carriage being prepared so she walked to the Durphy's and waited for the carriage to pick her up without being discovered by the sheriff. When the carriage arrived within walking distance of where Joseph was, she got off and walked and the carriage returned to Nauvoo without any problem. Joseph wasn't feeling well but "rejoiced to meet my dear wife once more." (History of the Church, 5:92).

1843 - Sunday: In the morning, the Prophet Joseph Smith preached on the death of Judge Higbee, a discourse on life after death and election and sealing powers. In the afternoon, he again preached. He stated he had learned that Sidney Rigdon was in the process of betraying him to the Missourians. He asked that Sidney Rigdon be released as his counselor and be disfellowshipped, which was approved by an unanimous vote. A week later, on August 20th, Sidney Rigdon read a letter showing his innocence and was returned to fellowship. (History of the Church, 5:529-532)

1853 - Augustus Farnham begins to publish a periodical called Zion's Watchman in Sydney, Australia.

1907 - Latter-day Saint Photographer George Edward Anderson takes his famous and moving photograph of the Sacred Grove in Palmyra, New York. He was the first professional Latter-day Saint photographer to capture images of LDS historical sites in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and Vermont.

1961 - The first stake was organized in Alaska.

1986 - The first branch of the Church is organized on the Island of Aruba.
