| Latter Day Light DAILY DEVOTIONAL July 12, 2017 Ten Virgins |
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY Doctrine & Covenants 45:56-57 "And at that day, when I shall come in my glory, shall the parable be fulfilled which I spake concerning the ten virgins. For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived---verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day." |
QUOTE OF THE DAY Wolford Woodruff "I expect that the Saviour was about right when he said, in reference to the members of the church, that five of them were wise and five were foolish; for when the Lord of heaven comes in power and great glory to reward every man according to the deeds done in the body, if he finds one-half of those professing to be members of his church prepared for salvation, it will be as many as can be expected judging by the course that many are pursuing" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Wilford Woodruff, p. 256). |

TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY July 12 1771 - Joseph Smith Sr., father of the Prophet Joseph Smith, is born in Topsfield, Massachusetts. He served as the first Patriarch to the Church, Assistant Counselor to the First Presidency, and as one of the Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon. 1828 - About this time the Prophet Joseph received the revelation recorded as Doctrine and Covenants 10 where is he told of the alterations made to the Book of Lehi by wicked men and that he is not to translate that section again. His gift of translation was restored but he didn't began the work translating the Book of Mormon again for a while, "but went to laboring with my hands upon a small farm which I had purchased of my wife's father, in order to provide for my family." (History of the Church, 1:23-28) 1838 - The "Kirtland Camp" of faithful poor Saints continued on their journey towards Far West, Missouri. They traveled about seventeen miles through "some what hilly" country covered in farms and forests. Several families had trouble with wagons breaking requiring repairs. It rained a little, cooling the air and making it easier for the animals to perform their work with greater ease. 1843 - At the request of his brother Hyrum, the Prophet Joseph Smith dictates to William Clayton, his secretary, the revelation on the sealing husbands and wives together for eternity and plural marriage, later known as Doctrine and Covenants 132. 1847 - As the original Pioneer company neared the Salt Lake Valley, President Brigham Young became ill with mountain fever. He and a few men stopped to rest while the rest of the company moved on, covering 16 1/2 miles before camping. Brigham Young's group caught up a while later in the day. The company also crossed the Bear River on this day. 2006 - LDS Business College moved to its new home in the Triad Center just west of Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. The move was symbolized with 100 students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the College, dressed as pioneers, pulled 15 handcarts full of boxes of books and other materials from the library the several blocks along South Temple to the new location. |
