SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY Alma 41:4 "And if their works are evil they shall be restored unto them for evil. Therefore, all things shall be restored to their proper order, every thing to its natural frame---mortality raised to immortality, corruption to incorruption---raised to endless happiness to inherit the kingdom of God, or to endless misery to inherit the kingdom of the devil, the one on one hand, the other on the other." |
QUOTE OF THE DAY John Taylor "Through His atonement, believers in Christ, and those who obey His laws, partake of His glory and exaltation, and are inheritors of the Godhead; whilst those who do not obey His law although resurrected cannot inherit this exaltation; they are raised from the dead,, but cannot inherit a celestial glory without being obedient to a celestial law" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: John Taylor, p. 51). |

TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY June 10 1829 - About this time, David, John, and Peter Whitmer, Jr., approached the Prophet Joseph, having become "our zealous friends and assistants in the work; and being anxious to know their respective duties, and having desired with much earnestness that I should inquire of the Lord concerning them, I did so, through the means of the Urim and Thummim, and obtained for them in succession the following revelations." These revelations are recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants as sections 14, 15, and 16. (History of the Church, 1:49-51) 1841 - Judge Stephen A. Douglas returned and delivered his opinion at the court in Monmouth, Illinois. Ruling the writ "was dead . . . the defendant could not be held in custody on that writ" (History of the Church, 4:370). The Prophet Joseph was released from custody. It was a victory for the Prophet and he wrote, "Thus have I been once more delivered from the fangs of my cruel persecutors, for which I thank God, my Heavenly Father" (History of the Church, 4:371). In mid afternoon Joseph and his company left Monmouth to return to Nauvoo. They traveled twenty miles and encamped along side the road. 1844 - The Nauvoo City Council meets from "10 a. m., to 1:20 p. m., and from 2:20 p. m. to 6:30 p. m. investigating the merits of the Nauvoo Expositor." An ordinance was passed by the city council against libels, an act was passed calling the Expositor a public nuisance, and the mayor was ordered to immediately have the nuisance removed. The mayor, Joseph Smith, then orders the marshal to destroy the press. "About 8 p. m., the Marshal returned and reported that he had removed the press, type, printed paper, and fixtures into the street, and destroyed them" (History of the Church, 6:432). These actions would lead to the arrest of Joseph and Hyrum Smith and their death in Carthage, Illinois. 1875 - Brigham Young organizes the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association in Salt Lake City, Utah. The YMMIA was the forerunner of the current Young Men's program in the Church. 1883 - The San Luis Stake, the first stake in Colorado, is organized. 1981 - The first stake in Portugal is organized in Lisbon. 2012 - The Manaus Brazil Temple was dedicated by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency. 2015 - Elder Jeffrey R. Holland became the first LDS Apostle to speak before members of the Parliament of Great Britain in London. Elder Holland spoke on behalf of LDS Charities, which has partnered with the AMAR Foundation, an international organization that helps provide humanitarian aid in war-torn countries. |
