TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY March 6 1834 - The Prophet Joseph records that he and Parley P. Pratt "held another meeting at Brother Nickerson's. The few unbelievers that attended were outrageous, and the meeting ended in complete confusion" (History of the Church, 2:42). 1840 - The Prophet Joseph attended a meeting of the High Council of Iowa held at the home of Elijah Fordham in Montrose. He told them that it was the will of the Lord that they should desist from trying to live the law of consecration and that it would not be kept until the Lord commanded otherwise. 1842 - The Prophet Joseph gave his Sunday address at Orson Spencer's near the construction site of the Nauvoo Temple. 1862 - The Salt Lake Theater is dedicated by President Brigham Young. 1948 - President Edward "Vaun" Clissold and his wife, Irene, arrive in Japan, the first official missionaries in Japan since the closure of the Japanese mission in 1924. 1986 - Brigham Young University basketball coach from 1949-1972, Stanley H. Watts, is inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. His teams won eight conference titles and two National Invitational Tournament championships. 1999 - The Colonia Juarez Chihuahua Mexico Temple is dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley. |
