TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY May 23
1834 - Zion's Camp continued their movement west. "We encamped about four miles from Greencastle, [Indiana,] after a hard drive" (History of the Church, 2:70).
1843 - Addison Pratt, Noah Rogers, Benjamin F. Grouard, and Knowlton F. Hanks are set apart for the first mission to the South Pacific Islands. They leave from Nauvoo, Illinois, but at the conclusion of their mission they return to Utah as the Saints moved west while they were serving. Others were also set apart for their missions to other parts of the world.
1844 - The Prophet Joseph spent much of the afternoon with the Sac and Fox Indians that were visiting the city of Nauvoo. They told the Prophet about how they had been robbed of their land by the Spanish, French, English, and now the Americans and how they had been cruelly treated. The Prophet in turn told them that he "knew they had been wronged" and "advised them not to sell any more land, but to cultivate peace with the different tribes and with all men, as the Great Spirit wanted them to be united and to live in peace." He then told them about the Book of Mormon. The Indians performed music and dancing for "about two hours" and "the Saints took up a collection to get the Indians food" (History of the Church, 6:402). Legal concerns continued to come out of Carthage. A grand jury meeting in Carthage was hearing testimony from William Law. The Prophet Joseph's clerk, Willard Richards, was to be brought to Carthage for testimony so he hid at the Prophet's home overnight. Hyrum Smith visited his brother Joseph in the evening and "cautioned me against speaking so freely about my enemies, &c., in such a manner as to make it actionable. I told him that six months would not roll over his head before they would swear twelve as palpable lies about him as they had about me" (History of the Church, 6:403).
1847 - On the Nebraska prairie, Nathaniel Fairbanks was bitten on the leg by a rattlesnake. This event changed the original pioneer wagon trains attitude toward the snakes. They previously had followed Joseph Smith's policy of never needlessly taking any life, but after a snake nearly bit Brigham Young, and now Nathaniel Fairbanks, the pioneers decided to kill the snakes rather than risk danger from them.
1893 - This was the first day baptisms for the dead were performed in the Salt Lake Temple.
1899 - Missionaries arrive in the Cook Islands for the first time.
2004 - The Copenhagen Denmark Temple is dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley.
2010 - The Gila Valley Tempe is dedicated by President Thomas S. Monson.
