TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY May 5
1831 - Around this time, as the Saints migrating from the eastern states began to arrive in Kirtland, Ohio, the Prophet Joseph inquired of the Lord on behalf of Edward Partridge, who as Bishop, had responsibility for making arrangements for their settlement in Ohio. In response, the Lord revealed instructions in the matter that are recorded as Doctrine and Covenants 51.
1834 - The Prophet Joseph Smith leaves Kirtland, Ohio, and travels to Streetsborough, Ohio, with approximately eighty-five men recruited as members of Zion's Camp, on his way to liberate the Saints in Missouri.
1838 - Word reached the Prophet Joseph in Far West, Missouri, that "two hundred wagons, with families, would probably be here in three weeks" (History of the Church, 3:27).
1844 - On this rainy Sunday in Nauvoo, the Prophet Joseph spent the day with a large company of friends at his home in the afternoon and evening. Elder Jedediah M. Grant preached at 2 p.m. and the Prophet spoke on the "true policy of this people in our intercourse with the national government" (History of the Church, 6:356).
1855 - President Heber C. Kimball dedicates the Endowment House built on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. The building functioned as a temporary temple until 1889 while the Temple in Salt Lake City was being built.
1873 - Elder George Washington Hill baptizes Sagwitch, the leader of a group of Shoshone Indians, and 101 members of his tribe in the Bear River in Box Elder County, Utah. Sagwitch's was one of the first Native Americans to serve as a full-time missionary and his grandson was the first Native American called as a bishop.
1936 - Conductor Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra performs in Salt Lake City with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. At the conclusion of the performance of Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus," Stokowski turns to the audience and says, "That was thrilling, wasn't it? A wonderful choir!" (Improvement Era, June 1936, p. 372).
1957 - The first stake in Georgia is organized in Atlanta.
1980 - The first missionaries arrive in the Central American country of Belize.
1981 - The First Presidency issues a strongly worded statement against the proposed building of large arsenals of nuclear weaponry and basing of the MX missile system in the Utah-Nevada desert.
1994 - In Papeete, Tahiti, Elder Russel M. Nelson takes part in the sesquicentennial festivities marking the arrival of Latter-day Saint missionaries in Tahiti.
