TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY October 14 1833 - While on a mission to Upper Canada, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon arrived at Lodi, where they had an appointment to preach in the evening. They also made arrangements to preach the next morning at the Presbyterian meeting house. 1838 - The Prophet Joseph preached to the Saints in Far West, Missouri, on the scripture "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for this brethren." He then called for the brethren who would stand by him to gather in the Far West town square the next morning to march to Adam-Ondi-Ahman to protect the Saints living there from the approaching mob. (History of the Church, 3:162) 1845 - Major Warren and his troops of the Illinois Militia, came into Nauvoo, Illinois, on this date. The Church leadership prayed that they would not do any harm to the citizens of the city. They stayed but a short time and left. 1871 - The people of Utah donate $12,000 to help the victims of the great Chicago Fire. 1935 - John Horne Blackmore is elected to the Canadian Parliament, making him the first Latter-day Saint to serve in that capacity. |
