TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY September 2
1835 - The Prophet Joseph Smith, along with Oliver Cowdery and Sidney Rigdon, traveled to New Portage, Ohio, to attend a conference. They would return to Kirtland on September 8th. (History of the Church, 2:273)
1838 - Upon hearing a large group of men were gathering together in a nearby county to arrest him and other leaders of the Church, the Prophet Joseph Smith sent a letter requesting General Atchison, of Liberty, Missouri, to come and counsel with them to see if there was a way to stop the mob from gathering and carrying out their plans. He also wrote Judge King asking for help in putting down the mob collecting in Daviess County. (History of the Church, 3:68-69) Also, the Kirtland Camp continues its journey across Indiana towards Missouri to gather with the Saints.
1842 - While spending the day at home, word reached the Prophet Joseph that the sheriff was on his way to Nauvoo with an armed force to arrest him. (History of the Church, 5:144)
1844 - The Twelve Apostles publish in the Times and Seasons a call to the Saints to gather to Nauvoo and complete the Temple.
1877 - The funeral for President Brigham Young is held in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah.
1898 - President Wilford Woodruff dies in San Francisco, California, at age ninety-one. He served more that fifty-nine years as a General Authority. Also, after hearing of President Woodruff's death and going to the Salt Lake Temple to pray for direction, Jesus Christ appears to President Lorenzo Snow, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and instructs him to re-organize the First Presidency immediately.
1932 - Elder J. Golden Kimball of the Presidency of the Seventy, is killed in an automobile accident while returning to Salt Lake City, Utah, from a vacation in California.
1996 - The American Legion, holding its national convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, presents President Gordon B. Hinckley their "Good Guy Award."
